My great grandfather, Duncan Macfarlane, left rural Perthshire as a young man and worked most of his life as a railway clerk in England – Sussex, Derbyshire, Somerset and Nottinghamshire. On 11 June 1885 he married Jane Elizabeth Cooper who was, at that time, running the Carpenter’s Arms along with her younger brother, having been prematurely orphaned. This was Duncan’s second marriage and before marrying Jane he employed Mary Ann Tougher (also Tounger and Tucker), a lady from Mansfield of Irish origin, as housekeeper, presumably looking after the children from his first marriage.

I am interested to know more of the Cooper family in Irchester and of why Jane and John came to be running the inn so early in their lives. Mary Ann Tougher had four illegitimate children and never married. There is a suggestion that Duncan was, perhaps, the father of one or more of these. Does anyone know anything of this?

I’m planning to visit Irchester in September to follow up my enquiries but any information in the interim would be most helpful.
