Re: Last artillery sets - unknown part

If there is a valid answer in either of the last two replies that were in Germany kindly ask for a translation as I would like to know the answer to this mystery pin with the eye hole part.

Re: Last artillery sets - unknown part

Dear Toby,
You can simply copy and paste the text into Google translate (or sometimes even right-click) and choose translate.

Michael says check out the Osprey book.
Thomas asks where exactly in the book as he has not found it.

This fellow’s excellent blog post suggests an elevating screw:

Re: Last artillery sets - unknown part

If you take a look at the way Strelets attached the unknown device to the gun, it doesn't look like an elevation screw (this should be fixed below the barrel and not at the end of the carriage).

The mystery remains. Hopefully Strelets can provide a satisfying answer.

Kind Regards
Thomas

Re: Last artillery sets - unknown part

I have yet to buy them, so best guess, is the eye is to tow the gun, the other bit to go under the barrel for elevation/depression for aiming , I struggle to see what else it could be.

Re: Last artillery sets - unknown part

It looks to me to be a peg for the hole at the back of the gun carriage, where handspikes would be used to help move the gun.
It doesnt look like something that would be involved in attaching to a limber & it is not an elevation screw for sure.

Ah have just seen PSR have updated their entry for these guns, and yes it is indeed for a handspike.
