Dear Ron

I suppose any hobby forum about scale models is going to get people worked up about things like price, availability, scale etc when things seem to be going into a negative phase.

I could write about the plight of gorillas or civil rights in country X - other forums, other words. I think it would be fair to say most of us are aware and involved with issues bigger than tiny bits of plastic.

Nevertheless this is is the right place to discuss the minutiae of plastic military miniatures. I welcome passion and engagement with the hobby and also appreciate the work of those who have provided examples/pics of their work and collecting on this and other forums and blogs. If a person feels strongly about a forum issue then they put it in a way they feel is appropriate - tepid or boiling and degrees in between though not offensive.

Being positive sounds like a good approach for everybody in 2009 and those plastic figures of yours may after all escape your bonfire of vanities.

Re: Re: Wise Words

I especially meant it towards anyone who may have invoked a negative response here on this forum.

Having been fortunate enough to have travelled extensively, it is amazing how often a seemingly confrontational comment or upsetting remark can be chalked up to a cultural divide, struggling with a language that is not your own, a pure misunderstanding, the limits of typing versus face-to-face conversations (where all the visual clues lend clarity to the speaker's meaning - a problem I face every day while dealing with 300 email from overseas).

And some of it is indeed just personality - we all have people with whom we may never see eye-to-eye. You don't have to take the bait - ignore them.

It's been said repeatedly, for instance, about trolls on this and other forums. None of us should be so easily goaded - if the intention is to annoy, why give them back what they want, which is a response of any kind.

For 2009, if I don't have anything nice to say about someone, I'll talk about something else. Seems to me with 450 sets produced in the past 5 years there has to be something more relevent to discuss.

Ron you ride in on teh high horse.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Wise Words

Hi Ron,

I got your point. We should discuss more about figures, quality, taste (a never ending subject), historical information etc. This is what this forum is made for.

But I fear as we are all people with faults and we are not the same every day it will not always be polite. That's how people are (me inclusive).

cheers
uwe

Re: Re: Re: Re: Wise Words

Nope, no high horse for me, Hank. But my recent Italeri figures ride high horses. And if Italeri makes its figures any bigger, then they will be riding ridiculously high horses

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Lowering hoofing standards

Ron, is Interesting to meet with your hands today .Italieri horses , do you consider using other horses with figures.Strelets chunky italieri skinny 1/72 so i guess you could use skinny hat horses.

I did a little trick to make mules. On italieri union artillery i do not like horse with no base.So i cut off the hoof and paint the hoof on.Now the horse look more mule size and teh milliput packs etc.

Maybe this technique not to your liking. So i paint white sock on the horse to cover up change.I use thin layer of milliput for basing the "mule".sometimes there is simple answer, around the corner. This forum and the others are good for help people.

You still come in on high horse i was right. Here we all get cut down to size eventually.

Mixing figures

Hi Hank,

Yes, I mix and match figures/horses all the time. As you know, some of the easiest conversions require nothing more than switching horses and a little paint.

I don't like that Italeri figures are giants compared to, lets say, my other Napoleonic or AWI figures. But I have managed to mix them in quite nicely with those from Marx, Marksmen, Spencer Smith, Kinder Surprise and others.

I've come to accept that to have a perfect collection of 100% historically accurate figures, all in the exact same size, covering every aspect of every period I am interested in.....will never happen. But there are a lot of figures that are close, paint covers a lot in 1/72 scale, and I read the forum for all sorts of clever tips and tricks. How else would I have found use for Imex Alamo Mexicans. As I have promised to be positive in 2009, I have learned to live with "close enough" while encouraging manufacturers to get it right.

I also agree that there should be a standard defining how big 1/72 should be. In the meantime, I have tall figures, short figures, fat figures...kind of like real people.

For true giants, the 28MM Perry and Victrix figures are off the scale. I know they are meant to supplement metal figures, but I only collect plastic. The only figures I have that come close to these are some of the Marx figures, and the Connoisseur line of Spencer Smith AWI / Napoleonics, which are about 30MM.
