Set 259 Dutch Cuirassiers

It's good to see the masters for this full set. More great figures to add to the Strelets War of Spanish Succession range! It will be interesting to see if the horses that come with this set are the 'standard' WoSS horses or new sculpts.

While this set has 'Dutch Cuirassiers' as its title, these will serve equally well as any armoured horse of the period or - with a little trimming around the cuffs and officers' wigs - for later in the C18th. In common with their British allies, the Dutch started the WoSS with little in the way of armoured cavalry, although it seems that the cuirass was adopted by some regiments of horse as the war went on. Osprey Men At Arms No 97 'Marlborough's Army 1702-11 has a plate which shows a Dutch cuirassier (in tricorne), which is based on a contemporary painting of the battle of Oudenarde 1708.

Needless to say, these should also be suitable with only a little conversion to serve as Austrian cuirassiers in the War of Austrian Succession and Seven Years War; in which case, this set will fill a huge gap.

Just a couple of small observations: Several of these figures are using pistols, although Dutch cavalry (in common with British) tended to favour 'cold steel'. And the large standard comes with a large and luxuriant cravat...which I believe was a feature of French (infantry) flags of the era, but probably not others. Neither point is problematic: Pistols mixed amongst swordsmen adds variety, or the pistol can be cut away and replaced by suitable blade (I use thin flattened wire, c. 15cm long), inserted into the hand with an epoxy 'hilt'); the cravat can be simply trimmed off, as can the whole flag according to preference for moulded or printed paper flags.

Will this set be released alongside the Austrian Cuirassiers I wonder...say, in time for Christmas?? :santa:

Re: Set 259 Dutch Cuirassiers

Very nice indeed and another great addition to this excellent range! I just wish the actual production and release would be as swift as the production and previews of the masters (looking at you French Royal Musketeers and Garde du Corps) ... sigh.

Re: Set 259 Dutch Cuirassiers

You beauty Strelets!

Lovely figures that are marvellously flexible and useful, well beyond the label, as you said Mark.

I'll look forward to mixing and matching a few of them with 257 as Austrians against Ottomans from mid 17th to early 18th C and also as Danes of the Great Northern War (a few figures from the Swedish Reitars thrown in for added variety).

We are, yet again, and continually it would seem, spoilt.

I wonder what delights 258 (for example) will unveil?!

Regards, James

Re: Set 259 Dutch Cuirassiers

Very nice figures indeed. Maybe a couple too many pistol users but not bad overall.
The WSS cavalry is certainly making me wish for the same standard being applied to the Napoleonic cavalry.
Much better designed figures/sets overall.

Another amazing surprise by Strelets...

Re: Set 259 Dutch Cuirassiers

I would like to thank and congratulate Strelets for the first ever box of Dutch soldiers! Well done and I hope there will be more!

Re: Set 259 Dutch Cuirassiers

Wonderful riders which enjoy us. Every extension of the range to the other combatants of the conflict is a gift for us.

Hope to see in the near future also dutch Infantry (regulars and grenadiers) and still more austrian grenadiers and firing/loading lines. One or two infantry sets for Prussia and Spain will been fine too.

Hungarian Hussars and Bavarian Mounted Grenadiers are a great dream!
