Re: First World War suggestion

A good set of 13 pounder`s is long overdue, as is a good late war set of British commonwealth infantry in poses for attacking a trench and defending one under attack, most of what are available are good for movement but the western front was not know for very much of that.

Certainly the ancient Airfix 13pdr is a real turkey! This idea does have potential for several different possibilities.

1. Early war with hats
2. Gunners in Brodies, gas masks etc
3. RHA (George VI troops) in ceremonial uniforms - something for London tourists to buy?

Probably the most important Empire field piece was the 18pdr. Yes there is the Emhar model but could do with some summer and winter gun crews. This theme could be expanded if the Pneumatic tyred is also considered for Commonwealth forces through out the world including the middle east.

RHA QF 13pdr Gun

From what I can see the carriages and wheel sizes(source period manuals) for the 13 and 18 pdr are the same in the real guns, when you compare the Airfix 13 pdr (effectively a toy) with the emhar 18pdr(reasonably accurate model) they are pretty much diamensionally the same size, except that scale wise the Emhar wheels may be a tad over scale size but there is some difference there but not in the real guns... and of course the barrel length...

So effectively the Emhar 18pdr carrige will work pretty well for a 13pdr gun, the main difference is that the 13pdr barrel is shorter and the breech is a bit less bulky but thats really it...

In reality this translated into a weight saving of around 5cwt (24-19cwt) in the original gun, 60% of this in the reduced barrel size the rest from various parts of the carriage and gun mounting that no longer needed to be quite so robust...

So if you want a reasonably accurate 13pdr now, and with the Emhar kit plastic it should be a relatively easy fix to do, just do some slight mods by shortening the Emhar 18pdr barrel by 6mm, and maybe if you feel like it reducing the bulk of the breech, adding a few extra details wouldn't hurt either... and then you can have it...

Re: First World War suggestion

At least the figures were useful on their own. The riders, horses, guns and limber not so much...
