Welcome to the Strelets Forum.
Please feel free to discuss any aspect of 1/72 scale plastic figures, not simply Strelets.
If you have any questions about our products then we will answer them here.
I know this forum is about figures and not politics, however, as a European, I cannot help but feel that destroying, moving, removing etc. statues of Confederate generals and leaders is tantamount to trying to white-wash history. We know what they stood for, but slavery isn't the only thing the Confederacy stood for. And many people had slaves a long time before them. We still have slaves today for goodness sake...
To me this is history and we should keep it as a reminder, and not try to remove it. Why not destroy every building or anything that has to do with history then? ALL history is controversial - look at it from the loser's perspective.
Anyway, just my tuppence worth on this topic. And yes, please do bring on the figures Strelets! They will be incredibly popular as there have not been any decent ACW sets in years now.
Happy collecting!
Alex
Actually slavery is THE one cause of the Civil War. Any other mentioned is not worth space. All things State and Federal and all Industries in the South were dependent upon slavery. It was the cornerstone of the South's economy... the value or worth of slaves in the US was more than the then all the industry in the North. The ACW was about slavery... as a side one branch of our family is that including Union Gen J.F.Reynolds, Gettysburg and another branch Confederate Gen Hoke. In fact my family flies Reynolds I Corps flag over our home with the Stars and Stripes.
Hello Plasticpanzers! Well, John Steinbeck in his America and the Americans disagrees with this and says that there were other motives, but I won't argue with you. :-)
All I say is bring on the figures for the hobby!
Cheers
Alex
It's not just statues but Confederate flags as well. You get a handful of people offended by something and they want to change history. It's ironic. Go to any truck rally in any southern state and you'll see a hundred Confederate flags waving. While some may be offended others are more offended they cannot keep a part of their heritage. I am from the South and don't care for this latest craze of political correctness. Just leave things as they are. Please keep on making sets which depict history as it was. If any don't like it they don't have buy them.Thank You! Cappy
US citizens do what you like it is your country. Empty plinths look good though. They should be replaced with funny sculptures of Ronaldo if they have to have something.
There was a good US TV programme about the Confederate flag which initially (7 then 13 stars and two red bars) was too much like the Union flag from a distance especially when furled or limp so they reselected one of the runners up (also 7 stars) in the 1861 contest. Another 6 stars later it became the battle flag.
Rewriting history. Didn't we British call the M3 medium tank the Lee and the M3 light tank the Stuart thereby exhausting our knowledge of Confederate generals for all time. This forced the USA to name their tanks - Patton, Pershing, Abrams, Bradley, Chaffee, Sheridan etc thereafter.
Talking of pc our local (extremely successful) rugby club has come in for criticism for being called the Exeter Chiefs. If Devon gets invaded by the Sioux we have only ourselves to blame.
I had two ancestors who fought for the Union in the Civil War. One was killed at a place called Deep Bottom, Virginia. I have been to his grave near
the Petersburg battlefield. I admire their courage (they were both in their
40s when they enlisted) and certainly believe they were fighting on the "good"
side. Nevertheless, I think removing the Confederate statues is disgusting.
They are a part of our mutual history. Political Correctness allows a few
angry, opinionated, fanatics to dictate what everyone else does, says, or
think.
If you removed all statues of people who owned slaves in the USA you'd have to remove some pretty important people in US history, George Washington would be the first to go! so I find it to be rather selective and somewhat hipocriticle... it must confuse an awful lot of Americans...
Who do you think is next - our Founders are already being vilified in some circles because of the slavery issue - sadly IMHO.
The Appomattox set could include the figure of Maj-Gen Autie Custer marching off with the historic surrender table balanced on his head
The problem with "vignette"-type boxes is that few people would buy more than one of them. Most of us want firing lines, marching/advancing troops for both sides, and cavalry and artillery. I'll certainly buy multiples of each, particularly the dismounted, skirmishing cavalry and firing lines. I wouldn't even purchase one box of personality figures and surrender accoutrements.
