Re: Esteemed Bashi Bazouks

Unfortunately no. The clothes are wrong in just about all respects. Although there is no decent full set of 19th century Pashtuns on the market, the Esci/Italeri figures from the Muslim Warriors set and the Redbox guys are accurate in terms of clothing and weaponry.

Re: Bashi Bazouks

Excellent news, I'm certainly going to use some of them for my C18 Ottoman army

Re: Bashi Bazouks

wonderful, agree with your enthusiastic comments

Re: Bashi Bazouks

I don't think that the three guys wearing the beshmet coats and the Chechen-style caps represent the kind of Ottoman cavalry that fought in the Napoleonic Wars, except campaigns in the Caucasus with the Russians. But the others are perfect! Take these guys plus Zvezda/Orion janissaries, Zvezda/Hat mamelukes and some Hat zouaves to represent the Nizam e Cedit and you can field a respectable Ottoman army from the Balkans to Egypt.

Re: Bashi Bazouks

Yes very nice it looks like these will cover many Era's, for me they will make good Napoleonic Ottoman Deli's.

Just a minor niggle I don't know why the Cossacks are included, we already have many other sets providing Cossacks, I would have preferred some lancers instead.

Despite the minor niggle a set I'm very much looking forward to.

Bashi Bazouks-Circassians

Dear Brian
The Cossacks, Caucasians or specifically Circassians are there because the set is for the Russo Turkish War 1877/8. Major Russian operations in the Caucasus in the 1860s had created a diaspora of these people who fled to Turkey. They were subsequently an important part of the Turkish forces and Bashi Bazouks. The promise of regaining Circassia in the RTW made these troops zealous and vicious fighters.See (just click on it) for an earlier more peaceful episode:

go to home and there are more articles on the Circassian diaspora.

Strelets couldn't leave them out but some of the Crimean war Cossacks could also be used or converted.

Re: Bashi Bazouks-Circassians

Thanks David for the article I did suspect that the Cossacks did fight for the Turkish as well as the Russians and this confirms it although, it looks like they were really fighting for their self's.

I think the Strelets set 026 Terek Cossacks would cover these perfectly and would still rather see 3-4 extra figures dressed in a more Turkish style no hoodies either.

I do not know weather the Bashi Bazouks still used the Lance in 1877/8, if they did then I would like to see a couple of Lancers included to replace the Cossacks which could be added to a future big box set such as Sevastopol.

Re: Bashi Bazouks-Circassians

Dear Brian
The Bashi Bazouks in the RTW 1877/78 had large contingents of Circassians (as did the regular army)so for completeness it seems logical to include them. Somebody just buying RTW Bashi Bazouks would expect to find some Circassians in the set. The hoods and overcoats are for the winter war leave them out and which BBs go with the winter clothed Turks or Russians?. The Russians also had Terek Cossacks (6 regiments)in the RTW who had more of a uniform than the Circassians in the Bashi Bazouks who were in the civilian national costume.
I think Strelets have got the composition reasonably right within the limitations of 12 poses for their intended use in conjunction with the other sets for the Russo Turkish War 1877/78. If they fit other periods then that is a bonus.
