Floodlights in the Boer War

I read about this machine with batteries used on boats in colonial time .Does anyone know when floodlit were first used in war .Maybe last time was Anglo Boer war.

Carbon Arc search lights were used from the Crimean war at least but I think only as an experiment and were used in the defence of Paris during the Franco Prussian war amongst others...

Thankyou ironside , i just love science and warfare.I guess at some point this was secret weapon until the enemies creep along at night and wow can you imagine surprise they get when illuminated. Yes...its definite mess teh pants time and run away.
