Re: Favorite 1/72 scale range of all time

But for Airfix WW2 and Napoleonic's few of us would be in to the hobby , so they are and always will be the one`s I have a soft spot for. Hat`s Zulu war range, Strelets 1066 and all that , Strelets WW2 desert range , all things FFL , the list could go on and on.

Re: Favorite 1/72 scale range of all time

Strelets are probably the best at creating comprehensive ranges. Its hard to choose but these are my favourites:
1 Strelets WW2 Stalingrad range (Germans, Hungarians, Romanians, Italians)
2 FFL range
3 Winter War + Continuation War
4 WW1 gas mask troops
5 WOSS
6 Crimean War
7 Boer War

Strelets makes such cool ranges that no other manufacturer makes!!

Re: Favorite 1/72 scale range of all time

Absolutely the WSS series. Red Box has produced a close second favorite with the Muscovites, Cossacks, and related historic sets, although they could do more. I begged Strelets, waaay back, to please expand the WSS series with more sets..... AND THEY DID!! Not because of what I had said, but still I was surprised. The Revell sets...30 Years War, 7 Years War, concluded leaving big holes that I do not feel have been addressed. Personally I am not a big fan of HaT's figures. Too flat, not exciting. I believe that Strelet's WSS series will be collected for decades. I still would urge them to do the same for the American War of Independence. It seems that when you produce a more complex series, it attracts hobbiests like me to come back every time an additional set is created. Strelets and Red Box have come to be the best in this hobby.P.S. American War of Inpendence is crying out for an inclusive series: Iroquois Confederacy, Morgan's Riflemen, Hessian Grenadiers, Blackwatch, and Historic leaders for both sides ala your ACW sets. Cavalry for both sides as well....and on it goes.

Re: Favorite 1/72 scale range of all time

I agree with a lot of your points here Chris. The more comprehensive the range the more attractive it is. So even if some phenomenal figures are produced, if there’s only a couple accompanying sets I’ll be far less likely to invest in it. I feel Zvezda always struggled with that. They produce some of the greatest miniatures but don’t have much variety. Their WWI Russians and Germans are a great example. I also share your sentiments about the AWI. Lots of potential there, and it caters to Americans, Brits, and even German collectors. The only issue is how daunting the task is (if you’d want to cover it thoroughly). We’re probably looking at 30+ sets. There’s just so much uniform variety and troop types. I certainly hope Strelets has the ability to take a stab at it in the future but in the meantime I’m really enjoying the WSS sets, and I’d rather them finish that line before they start a new one.

Re: Favorite 1/72 scale range of all time

I'm probably sound like a sell-out here, but I have to go with Napoleonic. There are just so many sets by so many manufacturers. Nearly every major manufacturer since the beginning has done several Napoleonic sets. There may be some questions about accuracy & suthenticity, but everybody took a shot. Every aspect was covered; infatry, cavalry, artilley, command, supply & behind the lines. It's all been touched upon at some level. I have more Napoleonic soldiers total than any other period by at least 2X. (No matter how many insignificent sets of WW2 Germans are made!)

Re: Favorite 1/72 scale range of all time

I started collecting Napoleonics for this reason as well Bert. The history is just too dramatic and interesting to not enjoy, and its coverage in the hobby is very comprehensive. So many cool sets available, and such a variety as well. Especially with manufacturers such as Fraznap and Black Watch miniatures getting involved to add a metal option if you want. There’s almost everything you could want available. The Strelets Napoleonic sets are also very attractive in my opinion. Whoever that sculptor is, is extremely talented.

Re: Favorite 1/72 scale range of all time

Caesar`s WW2 German range -surely the most comprehensive range ever in our hobby despite some glaring gaps.
But more seriously Strelets Crimean War range is for me among one of the best with their Boer War range not far behind. The WW1 ranges from both Strelets and HäT are also very worthwhile.
Additionally the Great Northern War Range from both Zvezda and Strelets are impressive.
And to give some kudos to Caesar their Biblical range was very good and broke new ground with their Hittites, Lybians, Hebrews etc.

Re: Favorite 1/72 scale range of all time

Absolutely, Caesar deserves a lot of credit. They of course have wonderful sculpting and also broadened the scale by producing everything from multiple Chinese history related sets to the aforementioned ancient Kmt (Egyptians) and Incans/Tawantinsuyu, etc. Some of their historical research needs refinement (a bit too reliant on Osprey titles), but the scale is without a doubt better off thanks to their contributions.
