Re: ACW

And that is where I disagree Bert! Though there is a fair number of sets available to the period I still believe that there is some major gaps, artillery being the biggest one. The Italeri set is proabably the best available ACW artillery on the market, but the soldiers are wearing winter uniforms. The Strelets sets are good, but both portray less commonly used guns (especially the Whitworth) and the Imex and Accurate sets really aren't that great. What the really ACW needs is a Zvezda or old Revell style artillery set. Proper Napoleon guns, proper limber, and a well animated and sculpted crew to accompany it. I always feel like a couple close quarters sets could greatly contribute to the range. Many if not most battles in the Civil War featured moments of nasty and desperate melee. And then I would agree with you that the cavalry is lacking. I could honestly list a whole load of wishes for the ACW but the ones I listed above are probably the most wanted (in my opinion anyways). The American Civil War will always be one of those projects that is constantly ongoing in the background for me. All it takes is a browsing of one of Don Troiani's Civil War art books or a trip to a ACW battlefield and I'm back into it.

Re: ACW

Just realized I forgot to add something crucial to my list... a set depicting the Iron Brigade in their Hardee hats!

Re: ACW

That has always been on my list!

Re: ACW

You caught me Asher. I was being a little too 'milk toast' on my list in hopes of getting... something! I agree that muchbetter artillery & figures are needed. & many more sets as well.

Re: ACW

To be honest, I don't believe in the whole "era's done to death" scenario.
Fact is, era's like the ACW are reasonably mainstream, thus mean Strelets attract more customers.....a good thing I would say?!
Sure some of us may have interests in the less well known (or taught), battles & wars, but the main interest will always be in era's like Rome, Napoleonics, ACW, WW1 & WW2. You would think WW2 had been done now, but there is always a unit or weapon that is yet to be done, or a existing set that can be improved. As skills & technology move along, why not improve old sets?

So I am all for sets being made for "mainstream" era's. Be it ACW or otherwise.

While on the subject of American conflicts, I also think it is about time someone started taking on the AWI properly. Better infantry, cavalry & artillery. The Imex sets are not my favourite.

Re: ACW

The AWI is probably my “dream range” Roger. Such an important world conflict yet it’s hardly been covered in our hobby. So many colorful and interesting units from the period as well: American dragoons and continentals, German jaegers and grenadiers, British light infantry and grenadiers… so much potential. In this hobby a man can always dream

Yes to that, the AWI is another fascinating period that is crying out for new sets. And my belief is that these sets could be commercially attractive to customers - both in the US and in Europe - making them viable for the manufacturer.

Re: ACW

& the War Of 1812!

Re: ACW

You mean like we need more than 74 sets of W2 German Infantry because it was discovered the Wehrmacht wore a different belt buckle in 1944 than they did in 1943?

Unfortunately, the manufacturers seem to think that everyone is a thirdreichphile and will keep churning them out. The arguement goes that everything Thirdreich sells. The same applies to the mythylogical tiger tank - only 8,000 of all types were produced but you would think they were the principle German tank of WW2.

Would be happy if they produed just one set of early WW2 BEF as this subject has been ignored by the main manufactures and HaTs offereing will never see the light of day

Re: ACW

I agree that there is a need for more and better sets of ACW artillery. Despite two very creditable Strelets sets, the other 'mainstream' ACW artillery sets in 1/72 plastic are somewhat dated and have their faults. So, 'yes please' to more artillery!

Re: ACW

So, 'yes please' to more ACW-artillery!

OK...here it is...

Re: ACW

But jokes aside...

Unfortunately, there is no really good ACW artillery set to date.
Even the representation of the usual standard guns is so bad in the available plastic sets that you can only shake your head.

The same situation as with Prussian artillery from the Napoleonic Wars...unfortunately only bad sets available...and only with three men to operate the gun..

At some point I went my own way with 3D printing because it would have taken more time to correct these bad sets than to redesign them straight away.

I'm currently working on expanding my ACW artillery again. In the last weeks i constructed three different horse teams (standing still, trotting, running) for the gun limbers.

And i have already painted the first prototypes.

I think I'll be able to show you some photos of it soon.

Re: ACW

If you don’t mind Gerd could you explain how you created these artillery teams a little more specifically? They are absolutely beautiful. And if you’re telling me that they’re available for 3D printing… I may have to invest in a printer!

Re: ACW-Artillery

Hello,

here are some images of my new designed horse-teams for my ACW-artillery limbers.

I created them by using the BLENDER-Software and some SLT-files of horses.
You can load the SLT-files into the BLENDER-program and then you are able to scale their size or "drill holes" in them. Or construct and "glue" a harness or saddle on the horses.

Finally you can copy the ready designed SLT-Files in the slicing-software of your 3D-Printer, which creates a control program for your printer. In the end you copy this slice-file on USB-Stick.
Then you put the USB-Stick in your printer and start the printer... The newest 3D-Printer have a Bluetooth-receiver, so its possible to send the files direct from PC to 3 D-printer.
First get some information from youtube...search "3 D-Printing"... f.e. : https://youtu.be/6TZ2R88rPoo
You may find many information for beginners there.

It needs some time to learn how to handle the software, but in the end you have infinite possibilities to create characters or animals. :astonished:

Unfortunately, there are also some problems with 3D-printing, because printer-resin is poisonous and smells very unpleasant. So you have to work with protective equipment (gloves, mask, glasses). I therefore always operate my printer in the garage and not in the house. :mask: :skull:

And one more piece of information:
Printer's resin is cured with UV light after cleaning the figures in alcohol/isopropanol. This is also time-consuming and odor-intensive.

After that, the material is very hard but also very brittle (like thin Chinese porcelain). If you fall off a resin horse like this, several legs are usually broken off. Therefore you have to handle and store these figures very carefully afterwards... I've broken off dozens of figures like this (legs of horses, bayonets on rifles, heads of soldiers).

Figures made from elastic injection-moulded plastic are therefore much easier to care for.
And you don't have to handle chemicals to get them. :+1:

Re: ACW-Artillery

Beautiful work Gerd 👍

Re: ACW-Artillery

Very fine ACW limbers and horse teams, they really look the part. Fine work Gerd!

Re: ACW-sets

I totally back up this request.
Please STRELETS new sets about ACW.

Patrice from Paris

Re: ACW-sets

Thank you all..
I'm glad you like my ACW horse teams.

Image 2 shows the first finished version.
There the saddles are still too far back on the horses, so that the riders did not fit properly. But this has now been corrected..
I then continued to work on and improved more and more.
Image 1 shows a more developed version. And images 3 + 4 show the final stage of this development process.

Horse teams with complete harness are a realy big challenge...
To create such teams in injection-moulded plastic is enormously complex.
In addition, not as many sets are bought as sets of infantry units. Therefore, the technical effort is often disproportionate to the financial result.

So my favorite for a nice ACW set from STRELETS would also be:

"Berdan Sharpshooters" :+1:

Re: ACW-sets

Wouldn´t it be wonderful ?

Re: ACW-sets

Love the edit Gerd!😂 That Troiani painting on a Strelets box is just too perfect

Re: ACW-sets

Hello,

a final tip according 3-D-printing.

This video-clip on youtube shows the basic work, that has to be done to clean your 3-D-Printer and make it ready for the next print.

https://youtu.be/onVNnRjbm5g

He uses a very, very large printer....
My MARS PRO-printer has a quarter of this size, but this is really enough space for 1:72-figures..
But the basic steps are equal..

So you get a good feeling for the things you need and the handling with chemicals.

3-D-printing is a little bit like "working in a chemical labor"... :warning: :biohazard_sign:

You should know this, before beginning.
