Hello,
I had been waiting eagerly for how to proceed.
Now it is slowly becoming clear how large the units were, that met there in closed formations.
Considering that the churchyard was taken several times by the Prussians and then recaptured by French units, it is understandable that the commander of the 16th Prussian Brigade referred to this place as a "corpse field".
The churchyard was the "Hougoumont of the French"...
With the small difference that the French were inside... and the Prussians had to attack over the open surface.
I agree, Gerd, it would have been a hard nut to crack. I sometimes wonder why the French didn't do more to prepare the place properly for defence, but then neither did the Allies at Hougoumont or La Haie Sainte, and the Nassauers bivouacked there the night of the 17th/18th before withdrawing north to Papelotte.
