As the Germans ran short of manpower they combed the air force and the navy for any troops that could be spared for front line service. The Luftwaffe Field Division was one of the results of that process. They often had an odd mixture of army, and air force uniforms and equipment. Considering they had little training in infantry tactics they did okay for themselves, often deployed in small units, usually in the defense.
