Re: Crimean British infantry

Beau Geste? So do you have some more pictures? I just bought the skirmishing Arabs (nice poses!) for a similar reason, having more or less completed some old Airfix FFL I found in a tin and painted up on a whim. Yes, I know they're not particularly accurate, but nostalgia etc.

Re: Crimean British infantry

Hi Colin
Yes, I have been painting the French Foreign Legion. After I submitted the Crimean Infantry I waited about a month and just figured that they didn't meet the standard. So I thought I would try the FFL sets. I set them out to photograph, not a job I relish and it's when I was submitting them that I noticed my previous set had been accepted. The trouble with the legion uniform is lack of contrast. Black doesn't stand out very well against Dark Blue. However some of the figures are very nice particularly the marching patrol they look like they have come a long way. The camels are a bit uninspired and difficult to mount and I would guess almost impossible to ride.
Yes I remember and bought the Airfix equivalent back in the sixties. Prior to the 1/72 range each plastic soldier cost about 6d, now I'm not sure how many you got in the first Aifix boxes but they cost from memory 2 shillings so now all of a sudden you had dozens of soldiers for the price of four old ones. No wonder they were a success and we ended up with armies.
We could do with some FFL corpses that we could drape over the settlements
I don't normally buy ready painted soldiers but at a pre Covid wargaming convention in Manchester I bought some Airfix prone Arabs for £5 and freshened them up a bit.
Anyway I'm droning on here, it's just refreshing to find people a bit interested in quite a specialised hobby.
Thanks for showing interest
Paul

Re: Crimean British infantry

Yes I remember them at 2 shillings (or 2/6d, maybe) - long time ago. The FFL I painted just now are the Airfix second set, but I actually still have some of the first set, which a relative passed on to me when I was a fairly small child. They were painted, with white kepis and red trousers, which I think is how the box art showed them. I remember being utterly entranced by them. Looking back I guess that was where it all went wrong!

No, that was One Million Years BC with Raquel Welch !
