Re: Crimean British infantry

You know, I never get tired of looking at British in scarlet red and these by by Paul Frechette look very nice to me. In fact, one of my very first Playsets was the MARX Charge of the Light Brigade miniature playset in the 1960's. Gold color helmets, scarlet red and white uniforms helped hook me.

And now Strelets has given us the whole range of the Crimean War in very nice and consistent colors. Paul's contribution motivated me to go to Strelets "Campaigns" link and re-enjoy all of the sets in their range.

Anyway, outstanding paint work Paul and thank you for all of the Crimean Range, Strelets Team!

GC

PS - Another thing that makes the Crimean War Range so fun are the outstanding Big Box sets which really help to add exciting poses for officers, cavalrymen and camp life also.

Re: Crimean British infantry

Really nice work on this figures ! Well done.
I hope Strelets reissue some of the Crimean range or if thats no longer
possible then some new toolings especially of the Line Infantry sets would be nice too
as the originals are not easy to get anymore.

Re: Crimean British infantry

Colin T
I've always thought that set was a bit disappointing, and in need of an upgrade, but those have turned out really nicely. What a great paint job!
I entirely agree. A very fine paint job here on some figures which, I think, are not Strelets' best in their Crimean range.

I know that Strelets have said that they have no plans to return to the Crimean War anytime soon...But I do think that there are two sets that need re-doing and re-releasing. One is the Russian Line Infantry set (in greatcoats); the other is the British Line infantry set.

Re: Crimean British infantry

Very well painted to a very high standard. It's always great to see such subjects which other manufacturers would not go near!

It's interesting how many pubs have names based on the Crimean War even though the conflict itself is largely forgotten in the UK. In our local churchyard (Beeston Notts) is memorial to those of the village (as it was then) including a couple from the 17th Lancers. It seems that if you did not die in battle the infamous Scutari Hospital saw you off!

Re: Crimean British infantry

To the string of kind comments concerning my contribution of the British Infantry. I'd like to thank you all for your encouragement and kind words. I have been plugging away now for some six years since retiring, however it's only fairly recently that I felt I could submit anything. Frankly I come away from viewing some website images feeling quite depressed they are so good. However I have felt more inspired after finding Paulsbods and the subsequent positive reaction on this Forum. Thank you, now where did I put that paintbrush while I deal with those pesky Rifs.

Re: Crimean British infantry

Hello Paul,

wonderful painted....and i know what it means to paint a correct british flag, if it measures only 2,5 x 1,5 cm...

I like the way you have painted them.

Well done..

Re: Crimean British infantry

Thank you Gerd
I thought the flagbearer to be the most unimpressive figure of the lot albeit Stretlets have made the flag itself big enough to paint.
I did this set as a change from Stretlets big boxes of 1066. It came as a relief to paint something in uniform without my having to think about colour. Following on an occasional Beau Geste theme, I have been painting the Arabs in Skirmish, these have been quite easy to paint and nice figures. It was equally nice to see that PSR gave them a a good review.

Re: Crimean British infantry

Beau Geste? So do you have some more pictures? I just bought the skirmishing Arabs (nice poses!) for a similar reason, having more or less completed some old Airfix FFL I found in a tin and painted up on a whim. Yes, I know they're not particularly accurate, but nostalgia etc.

Re: Crimean British infantry

Hi Colin
Yes, I have been painting the French Foreign Legion. After I submitted the Crimean Infantry I waited about a month and just figured that they didn't meet the standard. So I thought I would try the FFL sets. I set them out to photograph, not a job I relish and it's when I was submitting them that I noticed my previous set had been accepted. The trouble with the legion uniform is lack of contrast. Black doesn't stand out very well against Dark Blue. However some of the figures are very nice particularly the marching patrol they look like they have come a long way. The camels are a bit uninspired and difficult to mount and I would guess almost impossible to ride.
Yes I remember and bought the Airfix equivalent back in the sixties. Prior to the 1/72 range each plastic soldier cost about 6d, now I'm not sure how many you got in the first Aifix boxes but they cost from memory 2 shillings so now all of a sudden you had dozens of soldiers for the price of four old ones. No wonder they were a success and we ended up with armies.
We could do with some FFL corpses that we could drape over the settlements
I don't normally buy ready painted soldiers but at a pre Covid wargaming convention in Manchester I bought some Airfix prone Arabs for £5 and freshened them up a bit.
Anyway I'm droning on here, it's just refreshing to find people a bit interested in quite a specialised hobby.
Thanks for showing interest
Paul

Re: Crimean British infantry

Yes I remember them at 2 shillings (or 2/6d, maybe) - long time ago. The FFL I painted just now are the Airfix second set, but I actually still have some of the first set, which a relative passed on to me when I was a fairly small child. They were painted, with white kepis and red trousers, which I think is how the box art showed them. I remember being utterly entranced by them. Looking back I guess that was where it all went wrong!

Re: Crimean British infantry

No, that was One Million Years BC with Raquel Welch !
