Linear A Napoleonic Prussian Landwehr cavalry

One of the more charming aspects of the late war Prussian army is the diversity of uniform you can find even within the same unit.

I have long admired the uniform of the 6th Uhlans, 4th squadron (ex-Von Schill's Hussars):

centjours.mont-saint-jean.com/uniformes_unitePR.php?uniformes=15&drapeau=

As you can see they wear a black litewka but sport Czapkas (oh how I hesitate before spelling this word for head gear out!!).

As I imagine/hope you should be able to use the Linear A figures not only for Landwehr but also for the Uhlan regiments, this looks like a possible conversion.

So: one for the experts. Will the Waterloo1815 Polish infantry (of which I have many unused figures) provide an accurate source of these hats?

If not, any other ideas?

Re: Linear A Napoleonic Prussian Landwehr cavalry

No expert but I would say that while the czapkas in the centjours pic do look much like the Polish ones looking at haythornethwaite's book and other illustrations I've seen I think the Prussian czapka has a slightly different profile to the Polish one.

I see the Polish czapka as having three sections; a low, rounded, leather scullcap at the bottom; a straight section in the middle, like a broad hatband; and then the flared diamond shaped section at the top. I see the Prussian czapka as being in two halves; with a taller skullcap (more like a Raupenhelm than a Tarleton perhaps) on the bottom half and the flared top half rising directly from it. the middle section is absent, though there is usually a band of lace around the base of the flared section.

If you have "Uniforms of Waterloo" handy the 7th Uhlan in the red kollet on pages 72/73 best shows what I mean (link below); or there is this extant example of a Silesian Landwehr one:

The only place online I could find the pic from Haythornethwaite's book is on this post from Dibble on ACG so thanks to him, scroll down a fair way about 3 pictures after Blucher:

When I can find it again.:face_with_rolling_eyes:

At 1/72 scale it's not a huge difference, I think the Polish czapkas would look OK with a bit of judicious painting or if you want you could maybe change the profile with a bit of putty or glue.

What would be nice is if someone made a set of the regular uhlans in kollets and a set of Landwehr cavalry in litewkas and if we could have both shakos and czapkas so we could swap around to get most of the units.

Found it just in time for the edit limit to run out. Pinterest drives me nuts, I may have mentioned that before.
4 pics after Blucher, and it's a red dolman:

Ooh!

Yeah, very nice.

Re: Linear A Napoleonic Prussian Landwehr cavalry

THAT'S what I was waiting for! Definitely on my list now.

Re: Linear A Napoleonic Prussian Landwehr cavalry

Lovely standing pose, just one thing so how do I file for bankruptcy as I will be buying loads

Re: Linear A Napoleonic Prussian Landwehr cavalry

Wow, I think that I want to see the set from Strelets. The figure is perfect and should find quite soon some compagnons. I have to save enough money to buy some sets....

Re: Linear A Napoleonic Prussian Landwehr cavalry

Hi. I did knock out a couple Prussian Uhlan units, using the Hat Uhlans set and Esci Polish Lancers.

Head swaps to produce Lutzows Lancers which given the too small heads of the Hat set worked well. Simple paint job for the 2nd unit, Silesian Landwehr lancers who had a natty Polish looking uniform.

If doing more I d use the Waterloo Polish inf set (spares)

At 1/72nd scale minor inaccuracies don't show up.

Looking forward to the new sets

Will go well with Strelets Prussian Line and Landwehr

Cheers

Re: Linear A Napoleonic Prussian Landwehr cavalry

I have & will replace earlier, inferior sets with newer better ones. If the Linear A Landewhr end up looking this good, I may well "retire" the HaT ones.

Beautiful!

Luverly. The deft hand of Strelets' sculpter(s), or the same person/people employed by both manufacturers?

I would say so - I think Strelets are making it exclusively for Linear A

Re: Linear A Napoleonic Prussian Landwehr cavalry

Prussian Landwehr Cavalry !!!!

Wonderful....im waiting for such a set since many years.

And here they are ! :+1:

Re: Linear A Napoleonic Prussian Landwehr cavalry

Gentlemen,

for the avoidance of doubt, we won't make mounted Landwehr, it's Messrs Linear-A project.

Please, be guided accordingly.

Best regards,
