Pickett's Charge 3

Nice lot of troops in the final act about to engage the enemy! I just wish more were firing. One pose seems such a waste. Like the specialists! Tho it looks like the wounded officer is carrying a musket style pistol, way out of fashion by this time! Still need lots more casualties.

Re: Pickett's Charge 3

I'm still confident Strelets will produce firing lines for both sides. :relaxed:

Re: Pickett's Charge 3

Firing lines is a very good idea for the ACW sets & essential for the Napoleonic sets that were produced last year.
I love the British, polish & Highlander sets but when they formed up in ranks there's nobody to shoot at the opposing forces kind of defeats the object of the battle.
Airfix figures have filled the gap but are nowhere near Strelets Quality.:joy:

Re: Pickett's Charge 3

I don't trust masters anymore but yes it looks good

Re: Pickett's Charge 3

They look so good ! Thank you STRELETS.
The point is according to your productivity and my painting speed I guess I have work until 2175 !

Re: Pickett's Charge 3

Drummers are non-combatants and should not have a weapon. So the drummer with a pistol is incorrect. They wore fancy uniforms to stand out so they would not be targeted. Many drummers were boys because they should not be fired upon. Having a pistol is not accurate.

Re: Pickett's Charge 3

I seem to remember In the movie ‘Gettysburg’ that the drummers stopped short of actually participating in the charge itself.Does anyone know if this is accurate?

Amazing figures anyway and as someone else said I have enough painting projects before me now to last a lifetime.

Re: Pickett's Charge 3

Drummers shouldn't be armed, but usually drummers would attract fire because the enemy would direct fire against the sound. I remember seeing an ACW photograph on the internet with a young drummer with his drum on his back on the ground, dead, very tragic. Since then I haven't been able to track it down or know if it was authentic, perhaps in private hands as it was offered at an auction.

The ACW was the last American conflict in which underage boys were part of the military if I remember correctly. Whether a drummer on occasion would pick up a rifle or another weapon is of course up to dispute, but probably unlikely as they were musicians. Stonewall Jackson is often quoted as instructing his men to fire at drummerboys but I've never found a source for this.

And yes usually drummer and musicians would stay away from the heaviest fighting.

Re: Pickett's Charge 3

Wow! Really nice surprise. Lots of battle action with these soldiers. I really like ...

* Nice bayonettes on all of the rifles
* Nice blanket rolls on these Confederates
* Nice level rifles, yes they look so good and ready to engage the enemy any second
* Personally I like the Drummer w/Pistol; this guy is a man, not a boy
* Excellent Casualties and Officers; nice poses, but ...

* I wish all Casualties were wearing hats/kepis
* Would like to see socks pulled up over trousers, at least half of them
* Would rather see Navy Colt Pistols for ACW

My compliments to the Sculptor and Design Team; well done!

Re: Pickett's Charge 3

These are nice figures and will add much to the ACW line. I agree that if there is still time, revolvers should be supplied to the appropriate figures as muzzle loading (or flintlock) pistols were pretty much obsolete by the start of the war (muzzle loading rifles and muskets were fast approaching their end by the end of the war with the introduction of the Sharps and Henrys). A more realistic and useful pose would have them with revolvers.

The same with the drummer with a pistol; I'm not saying a drummer might NOT carry a pistol with him in case... (I know I would have) and in the heat of a kimshi storm like Pickett's charge a drummer would have been sorely tempted to pull his pistol and use it, but such a pose (as nice as it is and I love it) would be more of a novelty pose. Of course, it is pretty well documented (or accepted) that Johnny Clem (also known as "Johnny Shiloh" even though he probably wasn't there) shot a Confederate officer with a sawed-off musket he carried with him. The officer demanded his surrender. Clem is said to have "enlisted" at the age of 10 (I think - without checking - the official age allowed was 12, but the officers of his regiment allowed him to stay and chipped in to pay his salary until he was "legal"). So armed drummers aren't unheard of. At least give him a revolver.

I also agree that (according to the best of my memory) the drummers were ordered to the rear during the charge. Often they were detailed as litter bearers during a battle. Bugles were more effective means of communication in the din of battle.

But I love the pose and wouldn't mind including one in any battle I set up as it's the kind of pose that brings a scene to life.

Re: Pickett's Charge 3

Reading all the nit-picking every time Strelets teases a new ACW set is getting a bit discouraging.

However I really like the look of these figures, and for skirmish gaming I'll surely pick these up. I was considering the 2nd charge sets, but these suit my purpose a lot better. Thanks Strelets.

Now I need to figure out what to do with all those Esci, Italeri, IMEX and Accurate ACW figures...ah well.

Zirrian - The Accurate Union Infantry, and maybe Confederates, too have some really nice looking Back-Packs. I'm saving all my old sets (in the nice, soft, easy to cut plastics) to cut up the figures and attach back-packs to some of these.

Re: Pickett's Charge 3

You can buy separate back packs from Dayton Painting Association from the range RSM95.

I can only speak for myself, but there is a difference between nit-picking and trying to offer constructive criticism to improve an already awesome and impressive set. I come from a generation where we had to "make do" so often to fill in gaps in armies because there was so little out there on the market. Thanks to companies like Strelets we are seeing dream sets come true.

I personally love the new direction Strelets is headed and want to give them the utmost support. I think folks are just trying to be helpful and make great sets even better.

Re: Pickett's Charge 3

Great figures! Any idea of when their release date?

Re: Pickett's Charge 3

Lovely, lovely lovely! Plenty of marvellous poses yet again.

Thanks encore, encore Strelets. Looking forward to May(-ish)'s release and now beyond! :)
