Re: WWII Turks?

Actually, the Turkish Army of the 1940's looked quite different from that of the 1910's and 1920's. If you want to model Turks from that period for "what-if" scenarios, you could probably use Hat's WWII Romanians with an Adrian helmet head swap from any appropriate set of WWII or WWI French.

Also, the current sets of WWI Turks strangely are not completely accurate for the Greco-Turkish War. The general uniforms and weapons are OK, although the Kemalist army used a lot of British, French and Russian weaponry purchased from the Soviets. But the headgear is mostly wrong - senior officers usually wore the tall astrakhan hats seen in the Hat WWI Turk Heavy Weapons set, but both fezzes and the kabalak headgear were on the outs because they were associated with the disgraced Ottoman regime that lost WWI. Instead, soldiers of the Kemalist army usually wore a tall pillbox-type cap that resembled those worn by the Serbs, while helmets were of brimless Stahlhelm pattern supplied to Ottoman assault units in 1918.

Re: WWII Turks?

Mike, no expert at all but from the few photos I've seen and the answers here two sets might be a good start: either Imex Korean War RoC troops, or BUM SCW Republican infantry.

Both include some figures in similar caps and there are further similarities in the uniforms. Regards, Pa

Re: WWII Turks?

The Turks fought in the Korean War. If you look at early photos they were wearing blouson jackets like the British or Italians and anklets/boots. The headgear for ORs was the above mentioned fore and aft cap. The uniforms always had a prominent star and crescent on one of the sleeves normally right. Mix and matched with US uniforms eg overcoats and M1 helmets and they have a bit of French 1944/45 NW Europe look to them in a short space of time. More "raids" on the US QMSs for dms type boots, peaked hats, fur hats, parkas and the change is quite complete. Lots of variations and Life magazine archives is a good first port of call.Even some with Marilyn Monroe.

not as it seems--Not small Turkish troops but large N Korean troops some Mongolians are over 6'tall

Good old Dave, at PSR has just reviewed the Streletes Set M122,Turkish Infantry in Tropical Uniform. Looks like a pretty good score!

My question is, how long would Turkey field troops that look like the ones in this box?

Could they be used for as long as World War Two? Pictures showing troops of this type in the early 1940's would be great.

I recognize that's a long time but I also know as a large and varied nation, Turkey might have some units that retained an older uniform and equipment for a long time.

So the Turks in tropical uniform could actually pass for troops from the Arab Legion, a more or less British supported troop formed in the Middle East after WW1 ended. They saw action in Transjordan mostly, but these were really only skirmishes.

Their uniform changed in time, becoming more and more British, and they looked like British soldiers with a kufiyah as headdress just before WW2.

Not sure this helps, but there you go....

Cheers
