I don't think the wargamer, the collector or diorama maker *are* all that different. They may well be the same person. Sure we can argue over plastic colour or poses but often this is just personal preference rather than independent & separate camps at war.
Again, I think your idea a good one. Depending on the period, I do like/need ranks of identical marching figures but even here, I have a need for individuality, for quirkiness & the unusual.....which is what you are proposing of course.
I would, probably, buy only one or two boxes each of such sets but as wargamers are the biggest part of the hobby, a high percentage of us buying one or two could make it an economical proposition.
