I am rather drawn to the shield design shown on the artwork for the Roman Auxiliary set M016 (yellow, red and black pattern)and thought something similar would look quite splendid on my own troops.

I have never seen anything like it in any available references, and suspected it was more likely the artist's own invention, but would anyone happen to know if it has any resemblance to anything they have seen before? (I wondered for example if there might have been something similar depicted in Notitia Dignitatum which the artist may have referred to, and then backdated it several hundred years!)

Am always fascinated by any evidence of Roman shield designs,even though evidence is limited, but this artwork intrigued me in particular.
