Colonial Wars 1870-1900

The Empires fighting for the colonies: England, France, Spain, Germany, Belgium, etc...

Zulu Wars, Sudhan campaign, boer Wars, Indian sublevations, Peking siege ( actual sets could be improved)
Spanish-American War,

Best regards

Post WW2

Hi Strelets,

I will echo some of the comments above as I would love to see:

- sets for the wars of Marlborough
- anything French Foreign Legion for 1800s (Mexico / Camerone, Dahomey, North Africa, Tonkin)
- Apache Wars (US Cav Dismounted, Apaches Foot and Mounted)
- Spanish American War
- Russo - Japan War
- Riff War 1920s - French Foreign Legion, Berbers, Spanish
- Balkan Wars
- Chaco War

I would also like to see anything post WW2 as I believe this is a huge gap in the hobby (plus we have all the vehicles, aircraft, helicopters available in 1:72, but no figures! Some conflicts had huge battles and carried on for many years.

- Korean War (especially winter figures - USMC, Chinese, Commonwealth)
- French Indochina 1950s (French Foreign Legion paras, Vietminh
- Arab Israeli Wars especially Yom Kippur - Israelis, Egyptians, Syrians
- African Bush Wars like Angola (Portuguese, FNLA, Cubans and even South Africans) or Rhodesia (Selous Scouts, Rhodesian African Rifles, Greys Scouts, ZANLA, etc)
- WW3 1980s (Soviet Motor Rifles, Warsaw Pact, Nato)
- Modern Iraqis, Iranians (would be good for Iran Iraq War, Desert Storm, Gulf War 2)

I am very excited to see what new era you choose. I wish you all the best!!

Thanks for making such great figures!

John

Re: Full coverage of certain conflicts

I agree with PDA about the Russian Civil War. A great start has been made with the Red Infantry and all the WW1 Russians that can be used for many of the belligerents, as well as the Orion/Haron sets, but there's a few gaps:
Naval Infantry
Anarchist/Green Partisans
National Movements
Tachanka
Mark V Tank

Also, as tom s says, the ancient and medieval Far East is a hugely important period with only patchy coverage. The 13th century would be a good start with opponents for the Mongol Conquests:
Song Chinese Infantry
Song Chinese Artillery
Japanese Samurai Horse Archers
Japanese Foot Retainers/Attendants
(13th C Japanese that resisted the Mongols looked and fought very differently to the 16th C sets already available)

Re: Poll Update - Spanish American War and New World Conquest

Spanish American War and New World Conquest for me please.

Conquest of the New World needs Buccaneers and Spanish Sailors, Taino Indians from the Caribbean, Timucua from southeast US, Jamestown Settlers (with John Smith and Rolfe and Newport), Powhattan Indians (with Pocahontas)

Re: Full coverage of certain conflicts

Thanks Strelets for asking, and thanks Giorgio for the statistics.

Strelets have set an example by doing many conflict thoroughly. I believe that their latest sculpting mixes well enough with other manufacturers' that a change of strategy is possible (should Strelets wish so) in adding sets to fill gaps in existing ranges.

However you asked explicitly about entire ranges so here we go.

I like multi purpose sets. They also promise better sales. Please find some examples below. Regards, Pa

Italian Wars of Independence (1848-1870)
(can use French from the FPW, and possibly some RTW troops)
as suggested by Mike Stone

Austro-Prussian War of 1866
(can use FPW Prussians)
as suggested by Mike Stone

FRANCO-PRUSSIAN WAR X

Boxer Rebellion
(Chinese Imperial infantry; Chinese artillery incl. a Jingal team; can fight the 1895 War against the Japanese, Warlord era, etc.)
as suggested by Miguel

RUSSO-JAPANESE WAR XXXXXX
(Japanese can double for 1895 against China and 1900 Boxer Rebellion, Russians for anything from Boxer Rebellion to RCW)

BALKAN WARS XXXX
(can double for WW1 and beyond incl. WW2)

RUSSIAN CIVIL WAR XXX
(can double for WW1, SCW, etc.)

SINO-JAPANESE WAR X
(can double for WW2)

WW1
French Colonial infantry for use in Europe (can double for SCW, possibly WW2 North Africa, SCW, etc.)

Spanish Civil War
(metals available, but only two good plastic sets plus some others in fragile plastic; many other uses for pre-WW2 conflicts e. g. Rif War, possibly Chaco War)

Re: Full coverage of certain conflicts

* Spanish-American War (Infantry, Cavalry, Artillery both sides)

* American Civil War Confederate Horse Famous Officers (to finish the range of 4 sets)

* Mohawks
* Seminole Indians (for 3 Seminole Wars during 1817-1878)
* Comanche (Texas Indian Wars)
* Cheyenne, Sioux, Arapaho etc. (Plains Indian Wars; Little Big Horn)
* Apaches (Apache Wars 1851-100)
* Dismounted U.S. Cavalry (for Skirmishing and Garrison Duty)
* Early Pioneers (coon skin hats, deer skin clothes)

I'd love to see the Spanish-American War get the complete coverage. Also, the ACW Sets deserve to be finished (they are so fine!). The Native American Indians can all be used to cross-over into so many conflicts; the new Tecumseh sets are outstanding and flexible. Just got my 1812 Americans last week ... Bravo Strelets Team! Thanks for asking

Re: Full coverage of certain conflicts

I like the idea of North American/Canadian themes. It is one of those areas that has been done piecemeal or poorly.
The gaps for other periods are easy to see in the PSR "PERIODS" section. Often products in the same section are of different sculpting, manufacturing standards and/or are fairly difficult to obtain or are the same figures in a different box.
The Vietnam War has 3 very fine sets Esci(2)1986 and Pegasus(1) 2006 but that is it. It reads like 7 sets until you realise the Esci sets were redone by Italeri and Revell.

Re: Full coverage of certain conflicts

thank you for asking- much appreciated!

1. More German WW2 soldiers - ONLY JOKING!

2. In the WW1 range there is still a shortage of non European troops troops. So many colonial troops outstanding especially from the French colonies.

3. 19th century Latin American wars of independence.

4. Indian sub continent wars especially 1st and 2nd Afghan wars

Re: Full coverage of certain conflicts

I'd like to see early American sets such as Mohawks, Powhatan Indians,
King Philip's WAr (1675). Not just fighting sets, but also village figures
like ATLANTIC used to do, only better. Character figures like John Smith, Pocahontas, maybe Daniel Boone, etc.

Re: Full coverage of certain conflicts

Napoleonic Ottomans Infantry, cavalry and Artillery

Early Napoleonic Russians and Austrians to fight the above.

Re: Full coverage of certain conflicts

I'd like to see Cumberland's troops to put against your excellent Jacobites. It wouldn't take too much to give full coverage to this theme. Regular infantry, dragoons and artillery for Cumberland. A fat faced General figure would be useful too. For the Jacobites, irregular artillery, assorted cavalry and French troops (Scots and Irish) and perhaps some lowland scots.

Napoleonic Ottomans or Troops for Wellesley's Indian campaigns might tempt me.

Re: Full coverage of certain conflicts

All great suggestions! Personally I would love to see more FFL sets, particularly in the classical colonial period of 1871-1900 or the interwar period for campaigns in Syria and the Rif War. It seems that HaT has focused on the British colonial period, so there is room for someone to step in and do the same for the French. The Airfix set is ok, the ESCI set is very good, but I feel like the Legion deserves more representation in 1/72 plastic.

Re: Full coverage of certain conflicts

Airfix and Esci -later Italeri- FFL are no longer being manufactured. Airfix is out of making figure sets and Italeri do not seem interested in the FFL so, yes, an area wide open for manufacturers. Some Balkan Wars Mentenegrin infantry though....

Re: Full coverage of certain conflicts

Do some Russian topics:

1. Steer clear of anything recent (Orion got a lot of violent feedback with his Chechen sets)
2. Cossack Revolts (eg., Pugachev's Revolt)
3. Defence of Russian cities against the tatars (great reference - the Osprey books on Russian forts)
4. Yermak and others exploring/conquering Siberia
5. Various Siberian (chukchi, and far eastern tribes (include transport -reindeers, ponies, dogs- one or two dwellings, peaceful tribe members both male and female, a couple of fighters)
6. Russian American Company (vs Tlingit in Alaska as an example)
7. Ungern Von Sternberg - the mad baron in Mongolia - we could get Mongolians, White and Red Russians and Chinese.
8. Russian conquests of the Central Asian Khanates. Could provide generic central Asian forces or give unique forces for each Khanate.

Non Russian topics
9. War of 1812 - need cavalry (Kentucky Mounted Rifles, mounted Shawnee), artillery and naval forces.

10.Extend the use of War of 1812 figures by providing 1791 Wabash and 1793 Fallen Timbers US Army (foot, artillery and some mounted officers) - reference the Osprey books on these topics.

Re: Full coverage of certain conflicts

I agree with those asking for further Biblicals. Caesar (along with some sets from HAT) has a fantastic Biblical range, however we still don't have any Babylonians, Elamites, Chaldeans, or Syrians.

Re: Full coverage of certain conflicts - ancient

As a collector of ancient sets I would suggest 3 main eras:

1.) successor wars or hellenistic states: this is a huge area with a lot of different armies (infantry, cavalry, elephants, ...) from different areas with the main opponent Ptolomain Egypt, Seleucids, macedonians (could be also used e.g. as troops of Phillip V of Macedonia for carthaginian wars), hellenistic kingdoms from Asia Minor, ...
... and nearly none or only a few sets available.

2.) this was already mentioned: biblical/bronze age to complete the - probably never finished - Caesar sets and improve Mars sets.

3.) 5-7th century B.C. near east (uprise and fall of the Assyrian Empire): Assyrian, Bablylonian, Elam, Late Egypt (Pharao Necho), ...

especially the hellenistic sets would be very usefull filline the gap between Punic wars and (republican) Roman civil wars.

Re: Full coverage of certain conflicts - ancient

Second/Third Century Romans.

Fills the gap between 1st/Early 2nd century Imperials and the so called "Late" Roman sets (which are really half Gothic).

Also like to see 19th century Anglo-Indian wars & WWII General Staffs.

Re: Full coverage of certain conflicts

Dear Strelets-r, thanks for the opportunity!

I'll vote for the Boxer Rebellion. RedBox did a try with lots of sets, but their sculpting was very poor (and some rather 1/76 scale than 1/72).
Just imagine what such soldiers could have looked like, if sculpted in your new Strelets way (like Germans in Stalingrad or the 1812 sets...)

Re: Full coverage of certain conflicts

Dear Strelets, thank you for asking!

I vote with my wallet for;

Russo-Japanese War 1904-05
Balkan Wars of 1912-13
WWI
- Austrian 305mm, 406mm howitzer
- Russian 305mm howitzer
Chako War 1932-34
WWII
B-4 203mm howitzer
Some coastal defence guns
For North Africa;
Indian infantry
French Legion Bir Hakeim
South African(please, tan plastic)
Modern- agree with Arab Armies of 60s-70s-80s

Why not some riverine forces - armoured boats, small crafts, WWI and WWII - nish still open

Best regards

Re: Full coverage of certain conflicts

I'd like to see early war French and Austrian ww1 cavalry . Chaco war , and French Indochina .

Re: Full coverage of certain conflicts: The Cold War

The 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s

Re: Full coverage of certain conflicts: Midevil Russia

An expansion of your Medieval Russians and allies against a large Teutonic and/or Mongol Army/Armies, complete with big box sets and personalities.

Re: Full coverage of certain conflicts: Turkish vs Byzantine

A Turkish vs. Byzantine war. Lots of big box potential

Re: Full coverage of certain conflicts: The 7 Years War

Barry Lyndon

Re: Full coverage of certain conflicts

May I suggest Han Chinese with chariots the whole thing. Watch "Red Cliff" for inspirations.

Re: Full coverage of certain conflicts

Ranges that imho would be lucrative for Strelets.

- World War I
- Russian Civil War & Polish–Soviet War (plus the related 1917-21 conflicts in Finnland, the Ukraine, the Baltic States and the Caucasus/Turkey)
- Balkan Wars 1912-13
- Seven Years War 1754-63 & War of Austrian Succession 1740–48
- Russo-Japanese War 1904–05
- Boxer Rebellion 1899-1901
- Franco-Prussian War 1870-71 & Austro-Prussian War 1866
- Spanish Civil War 1936-39
- Mexican Revolution 1910-20
- French Imperialism (from mid 19th to early 20th century)
- Italian Imperialism (from the first Italo-Ethiopian War via the Italo-Turkish War till 1943)
- Byzantine Empire & Enemies (~330 – 1453, a time span of more than 1100 years which can easily be classified into several periods, some examples from their wide variety of enemies: Awars, Huns, Bulgars, Arabs, Sassanids, Seljuk Turks, Normans, Pechenegs, Ottomans, ...)
- Italian Wars of Independence 1848-66

Thanks for asking!

Re: Full coverage of certain conflicts

I would love to see sub-Roman Britain covered - Britons, early Saxons, Picts, Irish. We would, of course, need a very special Arthur figure. Perhaps some Irish boats and I would love to see Pictish chariots and light cavalry.

Re: Full coverage of certain conflicts

New Zealand Maori wars.

Re: Full coverage of certain conflicts

Peninsular War. Yes I know it was part of the Napoleonic War, but we really need Portuguese. Other than that then whatever makes Strelets money, may I suggest India around 1800-1830ish. As you can see my periods are all pretty similar.

Re: Full coverage of certain conflicts

Hello strelets,

thanks for asking; I would like to see a complete range of War of the Spanish Succession (Marlburian) figures.

While ostensibly these are very similar to your excellent Great Northern War Range, it would be great to see something more specific to western Europe, including:

French infantry with their cartridge boxes on their waist belts;
French dragoons with stocking caps;
French horse grenadiers with their funny furry hats;
British Horse with the cuirrass peeking out from beneath the coat;
Generic tricorne wearing horse and dragoons;
Dismounted dragoons, standing horses and horse holders;
British foot guards with lapels;
Danes with double-breasted coats;
Grenadiers with fur caps;
early hussars with wolfskin pelisses.
Austrian and Bavarian dragoons in lobster helmets.

If the foot could be made with a predominance of marching poses, much as with some of your more recent sets, that would be even better, and even more so if they can be modelled with knapsacks and other paraphanalia, unlike the rather sparsely equipped Zvezda ones.

Cheers, steve

Re: Full coverage of certain conflicts

Well, we seem to have lost all the French Foreign Legion sets and even the "Arab" and "Muslim warrior" sets and yet the history and campaigns of the FFL cover a long period and against all sorts of enemies in terrain from jungle, mountain, desert and even non-European towns, villages and cities.

I asked around a few of the model shop owners I know and I was surprised that they all echoed the words of PSR in a recent email to me:

"The world could do with another set of FFL for around the end of the 19th century, and a more focused set of opponents, but the hobby does not always get what it needs – just more WWII Germans!"

Seriously -I think the hobby has gone a little over the top on WW II Germans and I've been into this since the first Airfix sets appeared in the 1960s and NEVER known this many Germans.

So, FFL and their assorted enemies would be very nice.

Re: Full coverage of certain conflicts

To echo other respondents, thanks for asking the question and allowing us all our 'two-penneth' worth. You can tell from the number of replies that it's a popular topic!

i concur with others in general and specifics regarding the focussing on popular periods where there are currently gaping holes.

I'd add that it seems sensible and productive to build on the periods that you already manufacture.

Classical ancients/biblical such as Egyptian empire, Assyrians, Babylonians, Mycenaean-Greek (building around what Mars has), Trojans, Hebrews and perhaps even some mythological characters and beasts.

Wars of the Grand Alliance to Spanish Succession currently the only options in 1/72nd plastics are to improvise with Airfix Washington's Army and the wonderful Great Northern War figures from yourselves and Zvezda (there are even precious few 20 mm metals if one is desperate to fill the gaps). Steve Rowland has made an attempt to begin a list, but this one is HUGE in terms of both nationalities and troop types.

Taking in both Grand Alliance and 'Marlburian' means that you have a troops with the 'floppy' hats through to early tricornes.

I'd like to add to this a call for some Poles of the Great Northern War please--currently improvisation with Thirty Years War types is the only option.

French and Indian War my focus is on the 1755-1760 conflict, but it could be expanded to include conflicts between the imperial powers in North American associated with earlier periods (Queen Anne's War and War of Austrian Succession), as has been suggested by others. This period, with its range of Native Americans, militia units and regulars in modified uniforms is crying out for the 'Strelets treatment' of a wide range of poses and uniforms in each box.

French Revolutionary and Consular Period builds on your current range for the Egyptian campaign. Others have pointed to the lack of Ottoman troops and early Austrians and Russians, but there are also French infantry and cavalry (more hussars, heavy cavalry in bicornes, dromedary corps, infantry in various uniforms--revolutionary infantry in ragged 'uniforms' is perfect for the 'Strelets treatment'!), German states and even more early British (including interestingly uniformed volunteer corps).

I'd add to this a "sub-complete range" that is currently lacking: a complete range of sets of Napoleonic generals for all of the nations. Sets of general officers and staff in a range of poses (preferably mounted) to represent some of the 'second-rung' personalities not currently covered and a variety of 'generic' generals and officers to be used to represent others. This would obviate the current requirement to utilise the available options as different personalities by simple painting conversion and/or more 'surgical' approach!

early American Civil War another untapped 'period' ready for the 'Strelets treatment' with a great range of uniforms of the various volunteer, cadet and militia troops, including the mix of Zouave uniforms and those in French chasseur uniforms. Yes, these latter can be improvised with Crimean and Franco-Prussian sets, but none of them are completely accurate.

Thanks again for the opportunity,

James

Re: Full coverage of certain conflicts

Hi Strelets,

I was wondering, have you decided on a new conflict to cover? There are a lot of great ideas mentioned above...
