Re: Small Sets of Specialist Figures

I liked them when I first saw them on Bennos, and yes more please. The redbox WW2 Japanese aviators lend themselves to dioramas ,where as the zvezda sets have a more universal use. Zvezda have some more WW2 British sets on the way and I have to say I am very happy about that, not before time.

Re: Small Sets of Specialist Figures

These Japanese aviators/ground crew look exceptionally well sculpted and have the Japanese stature. There are the old Hasegawa kits of Toyota and Isuzu trucks which had some poor figures in them so these new figures could offer diorama possibilities with the starter truck and the fuel truck. Ace also make some Kurogane variants.
The Zvezda old Japanese are good. The peasants with ammo supply is a very good set and could be adapted for other periods. 4 figures and a pack horse isn't bad value at £2.99 or cheaper.

Re: Small Sets of Specialist Figures

As I mentioned in another thread - the Art of Tactics Japanese Monk O-Mikoshi Shrine is a great use of the format. Pity its release seems to have been postponed.

The great thing about the zvezda sets is that they are for the early part of WW2 which have been consistently ignored by other companies. These have a lot of potential. Certainly the 2pdr is a cracking set and also has been persistently ignored for too long. pity that the Matilda I is in 1/100 scale as it would be great in 1/72!

lets hope that in the Battle of France game they also produce some French sets (A 25mm anti tank gun would be a great addition)

Re: Small Sets of Specialist Figures

re early WWII
The Zvezda Bofors gun and crew is very good with lots of possibilities and would be good for early WWII UK home and airfield defence. The crew, if released separately, say as a £2.99 set, would see multiple purchases from me. The QF 3.7inch AA gun and crew would make a good or even essential companion set to the Bofors. Allied HAA (Heavy Ack Ack) has tended to be inexplicably neglected though Zvezda has produced the Russian 85mm 6148 and 37mm AA guns 6115 (which are not on PSR) and German heavy and light AA (which are on PSR). The Russian and British AA guns had a very long service life -- so maybe.

Re: Small Sets of Specialist Figures

For my two cents, I don't know why Red Box couldn't have made the
Japanese aviator sets in plastic instead of resin, and put them all in
one box like their regular output. It seems to me they just did it that way
too make more money by producing several smaller sets at a higher price.

Re: Small Sets of Specialist Figures

@Britsfan I think that making moulds for resin is cheaper than making moulds for plastic - I'm no expert, but I think that is the case. I'd say that RedBox didn't expect to sell very many of these so the expense of making a mould for plastic would not be recovered. Perhaps.

Re: Small Sets of Specialist Figures

orion made their byzantine sets in both resin and soft plastic.they made a few poses per set in resin then included all in the plastic set,if memory serves.i wasnt aware of a market for resin figures, but i guess there is.

Re: Small Sets of Specialist Figures

There are lots of 1/72 resin figures around: Dan Taylor Modelworks, Retrokit, Solfig, W^D Models, Milicast, MGM, even Cromwell make a few figures in resin.
