Re: Norman train

Crusader transport 2 has 4 wheel ox wagon and two wheel wagon pulled by asses. Arrangement for the asses to pull the wagon looks a bit Heath Robinson.
Norman Train should confuse most with a dodgy sense of history. Maybe Norman Supply Train is better.

Re: Norman train

The arrangement of the draw poles on these models is unusual to say the least, however at least the Norman vehicle has spoked wheels, and it could be used with some work for other people - other than Normans.

Re: Norman train

Would be interesting to know the source, a while ago I spent a great deal of time collecting images from Manuscripts many of which can be highly detailed from here.

One catagory was transport and wagons in particular, when pulled by equids, the images of wagons I found have either a collar or a simple breast strap type harness with the driver being mounted in a saddle when this was appropiate, which seemed the case in most images. Ass/mule or Horses supplying the motive power singly or in pairs arranged abreast or in column.

This manuscipt includes several such wagons:

carriages similar to the Odemars "carpentum" are also pretty common usually carrying the wealthy and their ladies with the same harness arrangements above.

Another vehicle noted was an ambulance...

Unfortunatly I dont think its possible to post anything other the a general link to the site due to copyright restrictions.

An image of an Ox drawn cart can be found here:

My experience as well. With equids a collar more or less sits on the scapula- shoulder blade and the harness on the sternum.
Oxen have thicker set necks so they can pull with a yoke. The yoke tends to be umpteen variations of this:

the drawbar fixes to the loop in the middle.

Found a better way to search for images here:

go to "Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts" and search for "wagon" and "cart" which brings up a fair few results..
