MSA Reg Changes for 2014 - Safety

For those who don't read their MSA News and the Rule Changes section that accompanies it, please note that with effect January 1 2014 GR K.2.1 (seat belts)has been modified to specify that bolt dimensions must be either 7/16 UNF or M12 (grade 8.8) where the manufacturer's standard belts and associated fitments are not used.

There is a new drawing as well (44) which is something to look out for when you get your Blue Book!

The reason for all this is to align with FIA requirements and to clarify because the (previous) drawings mentioned the bolt sizes but the Regulation did not.

Re: MSA Reg Changes for 2014 - Safety

I suppose the key part of this is that we are using the manufacturer’s fitment so this will not apply. The other problem is that harnesses are not supplied with 12mm holes. The Willans set I fitted at the start of the year only had 8mm holes and Willans specifically state that no modifications should be carried out to the harness.

It’s is more important that the attachment point on the car that has to take the load is strong enough and is in good condition.

Re: MSA Reg Changes for 2014 - Safety

Also important that the chassis of the car is in one piece and has not been stoved in at the front, that all four wheels are attached, and the driver is sitting at the driving position. Jonathan Hair (Jonty), Tim Covill (nicknamed the Coach and Horses), Onno Zuidema (the Flying Dutchman) and Marcus Bicknell (Rusty Rivet) all wrote off (or severely damaged)race cars in accidents this year... woaw Clubmans guys, NONE of these incidents was in a Clubmans race. And we all avoided getting badly hurt which is a great testament to the cars, collapsible structures, belts, Hans device, and safety regs. None of us have finished rebuilding them yet. Yikes, only 4 months till we're racing.

I trust that the harnesses in use at the time will have been duly destroyed and binned and replaced with new ones, using the correct sized fixings of course
