How Does an Electric Motorcycle Work?

The magic starts with the battery of your electric motorcycle. Charging it is similar to that of an electric car that uses an electric charging station or outlet installed near your housing area. It can take anywhere between 4 to 24 hours to reach full charge, depending on the type of battery your motorcycle has. For example, lithium batteries are fast-charging and can be fully recharged within 1 to 2 hours. Where else, a lead acid battery will take over 12 hours to charge to full capacity.

Once you charge the battery, you can start your electric motorcycle with just a turn of the key – very much like a conventional motorbike. What’s different is, instead of the pistons moving up and down in the cylinder block, driven by explosions of a fuel-air mixture that has been ignited by a spark, the electric motorcycle just transforms the power from the battery directly to the engine.

Whilst removable batteries are not an option on all electric motorbikes on the market right now, there are an increasing number that do - especially small capacity models. Removable batteries allow far more freedom on your bike, allowing you to charge one battery at home, whilst you use the other to commute to and from work. There are a lot of electric motorcycles out there today that also offer an option of adding a spare battery to help improve range, meaning your spare battery isn’t just a matter of convenience; it could help you take longer journeys too.

At the time, Zero cited a lack of support from the UK Government for electric motorcycles as a big factor in their decision to withdraw from the UK. However, they returned in 2016 thanks to the introduction of the plug-in motorcycle grant (PiMG) and have slowly been gaining market share with their impressive range of bikes. I think it is fair to say that thanks to the rise in popularity of the electric car manufacturer Tesla, really helped to bring the idea of electric vehicles to most of our lives and forefronts.

Since then, the likes of BMW Motorrad, Piaggio, Harley Davidson, and Honda have all introduced their very own production of electric motorcycles and scooters, as well as rumours of Triumph, Kawasaki, and KTM also coining in on the electric market very soon.
