Sunday Social - Dog Food

Good Morning!

Today's topic:
What do you feed your dog/s? Why and/or how did you chomp with that choice? Do you have any other interesting or helpful thoughts on feeding?

Have a Golden Day!!

Re: Sunday Social - Dog Food

I currently feed Trapper and Keevin Earthborn Holistic Coastal Catch. It is a fish based protein which seems to work best for my allergy boy Trapper. Keevin would probably be fine with anything but it's so much easier if they are on the same thing. I know raw would be good, but it is so expensive and more trouble and this seems to be fine. I used to feed Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream, which I also liked, but they stopped the buy 12 get 1 free promotion so I switched. Grain free is important, as is the quality of the ingredients. Earthborn gets high marks on the dogfoodadvisor website (http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-reviews/earthborn-holistic-grain-free/).

In addition to their food, I add several supplements but we'll leave that for another topic.

Re: Sunday Social - Dog Food

Good timing on this subject. It will be nice to see what other people are feeding their dogs.

Crystal was eating Innova at the foster family's home when I adopted her, so she had been on that for only a couple weeks or so. She was having issues with diarrhea and was taking meds for that. I have kept her on Innova trying to calm her system down with some luck, but I think she has a sensitive tummy as I have to be careful about how much extras like chicken & tuna I give her. I have wanted to switch her to a grain free food but just not sure how she would handle it. I had purchase a small bag of Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Diet that the local pet store recommended. I added 1/4 cup to her food that day. She started to have loose stools and had one day of accidents in the house. I am kind of at a loss. I have tried adding a bit of the pumpkin to her meals but it doesn't seem to help.

Re: Sunday Social - Dog Food

We have been feeding Simply Nourish Salmon and Sweet Potato. I think that it now has peas in it.

When forever foster Jake came to us, he had problems with diarrhea, sometimes very severe. We eventually worked out this food was good for him, but we also had to have several rounds of a prescription probiotic from our vet, as well as a round or two of metronidazole. This was all part of their protocol for serious GI issues. Luckily we did not have to go farther than that. We also discovered early on that Jake was being overfed. A dog can only digest so much food, so we gradually reduced his food in quantity.

We did find that canned pumpkin always agreed with him, which is why we went to a sweet potato-type of grain-free food. All of our goldens seem to like salmon.

We also give them a can of Evanger's chicken (only-nothing else) or beef & chicken daily, shared by the three of them.

Sincerely,

PJ Tonkin

J has been on Acana Lamb and Apple for 3 years now and is doing very well. I was pleased to see it ranked so well on the Dog Food Adviser. Thank you Debbie for letting us know about that.

Re: Sunday Social - Dog Food

We feed both dogs Iams Vetrinary Formula Skin and Coat Plus (fish and potato) because of Gage's skin allergies. Same thing, it is just easier to feed both of them the same thing. I will highly recommend ordering from Chewy.com. We used to be able to only get this food from the Doctor's office who sold it to us at their cost; however, it was still out of the way to have to pick it up. We tried this site and loved it. The price was the same and we also get free shipping.
