Paging Vicki

I've been thinking about Butch and wondering how he's doing. Keeping him, and you and Denny, in our thoughts and sending lots of golden prayers.

Re: Paging Vicki

Thanks Marcy. Butch is doing great. He's his normal self. He's not sick or anything. (He did have bad experience with the sedative they gave him for the ultrasound but is ok now). We on the other hand are not having fun. We've been talking to several people and Vets about this mass and chances of it being cancer. There's a huge risk with the surgery too and we're not sure we want to put our boy through all of that. There's a risk anyway we go about it. We're thinking about whats best for Butch of course, all of us here do that. We've spent $1,500.00 already and haven't even had surgery.

Thanks for asking. We have not made a final decision about this yet.

Re: Paging Vicki

Vicki, I'm wishing you peace whatever you decide. It's never easy trying to decide the best course for our beloved companions, but we always use love and their best interests as the main guideline, so no one can ask for more than that. Give that boy a squeeze from me, please.

Re: Paging Vicki

Vicki, thank you for the update on Butch. I'm glad he's feeling well and is enjoying life. This may not make much sense,as I may not be wording it correctly, but I wish humans could have the innocence of animals when it comes to facing the unknown. You and your husband have decisions to make, and those decisions are being made with research, love and keeping Butch's best interest as your top priority. Sending you lots of golden thoughts and prayers. Please give Butch a gentle hug for me.

Re: Paging Vicki

Vicki,

It's not an easy decision that we sometimes have to make for our beloved pets. Butch is deeply loved and you have his best interests at heart - he could not ask for more.

Thinking of you during this difficult time.

Re: Paging Vicki

All of my medical knowledge says that people and presumably dogs can live well without the spleen. Personally, I am doing fine without a few things that have been removed along the way. However, being older now, I don't know what I would be willing to tolerate in the way of surgery.

So I can empathize a bit with your dilemma in reviewing all of the options for Butch.

Whatever you choose it will be with the best intentions for Butch's well-being, but it is tough.

Sending you all good golden thoughts.

Re: Paging Vicki

Vicki, What a tough place to be. There are so many things to consider and, either way, it's a very tough decision. I'm thinking of you and continue to send tons of positive thoughts.

Re: Paging Vicki

Debbie,

Do you have any experience with Dr.Peila at Valley Vet in Longmont? That's who will be doing the surgery if we have it which we probably will. Dr. Mooney at Aspen Vet hospital referred him. Aspen Vet was way too high but Valley Vet was reasonable. Just wondered if you know him?

Vicki

Re: Paging Vicki

Vicki, I am not familiar with Dr. Peila or Valley Vet. I have driven by it many times but know nothing about it and don't know anyone who goes there. My vet practices out of his car, and I have a clinic in Boulder that is my back-up. I looked him up on line and didn't see anything that would indicate any problems or red flags.

Did you go to Aspen Meadows Veterinary Specialists first? I know they are very expensive. Did they send you to Dr. Peila? If they did, I think that would be a good recommendation.

I am so sorry that you are having to deal with such a hard decision and such a serious condition. I know that there are compelling reasons to go ahead with surgery, or not to. Whatever you decide, be at peace with it, and make whatever time you still have with Butch quality time. Hugs to you all.

Re: Paging Vicki

Vicki: I am dealing with a similar situation with Tia, so I understand the mix of emotions and rational thought. In the end, we will do what is best for our beloved companions. And that may not be keeping an animal alive at any cost, but rather choosing quality over quantity of life. Butch trusts you with everything he has; I know you always do what is best for him. I'm just sorry we have to face such heart-wrenching decisions.

Re: Paging Vicki

Ann,

What is wrong with Tia? If you don't mind me asking.

Vicki

Re: Paging Vicki

Tia was diagnosed with a brain tumor after she started having seizures last October, shortly before Mila died. Medications have greatly helped the seizures; she was seizure-free for five months. She had two more a couple of weeks ago; her neurologist increased the dosage of one of her medications. Since then she has had no more seizures and has felt great. We don't know how long she has had the tumor or how quickly it is growing. Surgery is not an option as the tumor is growing into her brain.

Re: Paging Vicki

I'm sorry to hear this Ann. I can't believe how much cancer has come into the canine world. Especially Golden Retrievers for some reason.

I will include Tia in my prayers.
