Egyptian cavalry in the Sudan

I really want to add an Egyptian cavalry unit of some type to my Mahdist wargame forces.

In 1/72, there’s not much available. I have, with some difficulty acquired the Strelets Turkish Regular Cavalry set:

Gendarmes in blue? Near enough to regular cavalry? Some type of Bashi Bazoouk?

It’s also difficult to find any uniform information. I have seen wargames’ figures of Egyptian cavalry in white (though with the regulation jacket rather than the zouave-style one) but with inexplicable mid blue trousers. Where does this come from??

Any advice is welcome as I really want to start painting.

Re: Egyptian cavalry in the Sudan

From memory , as a rule of thumb, white =summer uniform, Blue = Winter for mostif not allarms of service for the Egyptian army, but your right information is very hard to come by, I remember the struggle I had trying to find out.

Thanks, Allen. I actually found some answers from the same question asked at the nearly defunct HaT forum.

Re: Egyptian cavalry in the Sudan

Speaking of HaT...more Egyptians would have been a very welcome addition to HaT's Victorian era (British colonial) line, which was fantastic. But this line seems to have stalled for a very long time at just one set of new zulu warriors. Their overall production output has slowed to a trickle if not a very slow drip over the recent years which is both sad and frustrating.

Yes, HaT have disappointed. However, there are always ways around, particularly if you're willing to add metal figures to make up for shortfalls.
