Re: Game of thrones in 1/72

I agree! I'm sure there would be a demand among the existing 1/72 collectors, especially the fantasy figure ones. It may even create a whole new batch of future figure collectors with GoT fans and even those wanting to recreate the battles. Fantasy range adds a whole new world for me - I'm working on my Israeli Defence Forces (Caesar and Orion sets) fighting off a huge zombie horde (as in World War Z). These battle hardened guys could take on a Dothraki horde next :-)

A 1/72 figure producer could get at least 12 different sets out of GoT. If I were one, I would be tempted to make a few sculpts and/or figure sprues, send them to the GoT owners/production company, and work out a license agreement...

Re: Game of thrones in 1/72

I am afraid it would have to be called something different and the figures would also need to very different. There have already been partwork figures (1/35th?) released which of course were licensed and guaranteed high volume sales. McFarlane do them as well. The more successful the film or TV series then the bigger the bill/fine for illegal use of copyrighted materials. I would think HBO have a legal department 10 times bigger than all of Strelets, Hat, Caesar etc combined.Funko pop do these slightly modified proportions ones:

Re: Game of thrones in 1/72

I found this range in 28mm. Made under licence apparently but obviously based on the characters in the book because they don't look much like the actors in the TV show (the Lysa figure is particularly disappointing).

https://www.magistermilitum.com/scale.html?cat%5B%5D=60048#order=name&limit=36&p=undefined&dir=ASC&cat[]=60049&cat[]=60048

I'm not surprised these were done in 28mm I imagine that a lot of the hard core young fans (You know, the ones who dress up in the costumes and learn the pretend languages and stuff)are already into the Games Workshop type games. But the existence of a 28mm range probably makes it less likely you'll ever see a licenced range in 1/72.

Of course there is that range of figures that I absolutely do NOT think looks anything like the LOTR characters and no copyright lawyer could ever convince me otherwise . "August Bank Holiday is coming".

Re: Game of thrones in 1/72

Yep Wars of the Roses with Dragons and practically everything else, at the moment theres plenty of Medieval, Early Medieval(dark Ages)and Barbarian types as well as undead zombies etc so I dont see it as a problem anyway...

As far as copyright goes GOT may be copyrighted but you could still produce sculpts of the characters, just not call it Game of Thrones... how about GOD, Game of Dragons.. **** thats already been taken...
Anyway copyright has more to do with how much money and time your prepared to throw at it regardless of actual rights, a company like HBO could keep you in court forever...
So the only real option is to seek permission and pay a probably very high fee....

Re: Game of thrones in 1/72m

Hi, i am also fan of Game of Thrnes books and Series, but my opinion is that in the series they keep so big universe in a relatvely small Version. ffor the 1/72 adaption i would not stay waiting to smeone to release any tv-adapted figures.
I prefer to take existing sets and adapt them (from Dark ages and medieval europe and asi you have already so many figs, and more Variety.. Just giving right banners will give you the good look of the army
For Instance i prefer taking zvezda vikings as Men of Iron rather than those ugly grey and uniformed robes from the show, in the series Uniformity is everywhere and i hate that: a medieval universe should be more varied and depending on each fighter or small unit. Just royalmguard or elite units maybe should have any uniform.

Undead:they are already available from Caesar and Alliance. And you can add more figures from medieval sets which are just "weird looking" and painting them in the right way:it increases undead armies very easy and fast :)
Well, the WHite Walkers are missing, you are right. In the meanwhile i would use some ugly alliance Elves :)

I think that maybe one or two specialist sets with Personalities/main character would really work, inlcuding mounted and foot versions of many of them. That is a nice suggestion for any interested manufacturer.

By the way, Caser released some bizarre metal set with named "game of thrones" i was lucky to get one of that. Not bad at all..Cersei, Tyrion,Ned, Robb and some Jaime/and/or Brienne de Tarth were there. Not cheap (5figs-6eur )but i liked that. For sure copyright was not paid then..Licenses can be indeed the major issue if someone want to release related products

A last word on dragons: from the 28mm fantasy world you have many offers! (Is a1/72 dragon really different?) Reaper Bones helped me to get decent Adult and Hatchling dragons for Daenerys Targaryen (i just miss herself now actually)

I will try to post new pics of these projects in my blog after holidays. But at the moment maybe you want to have a look of other proposals there

Re: Game of thrones in 1/72m

On Dragons,Schliech are making a range of dragons that I think would work:

https://www.schleich-s.com/en/GB/eldrador/products/filter/theme/dragons.html

For a scale comparison the human/Elf figures are about 9-10cm tall so these would make suitably sizes full grown dragons for 1/72 or even 28mm and are very nice overall well painted and detailed...

and if thats not enough Bullyland also do a range of Dragons including baby dragons:

http://www.bullyland.de/index.php?id=620&L=1%252

http://www.ebay.de/itm/Bullyland-Micro-Drache-Minidrachen-Sammel-Figur-4-5-cm-NEU-/161795007473?var=&epid=1618629903&hash=item25abbbe3f1:m:msZjDbXsTeT2resPDF162aA

Also if you look around gift and toy shops you can sometimes find some quite nicely done little dragons made from resin...

Re: Game of thrones in 1/72m

Oh, yes the schleich and Bullyland options are indeed a nice suggestion!
Well pointed

Re: Game of thrones in 1/72m

I have to raise my hand here and say I belong to a very small minority that don't actually like GoT, hated the books, haven't seen the tv series.

Having said that it's like everything you make what you want with what's available. And there's plenty of WotRoses stuff out there.

I have been playing a skirmish game called Dragon Rampant from Osprey publishing for dragons in that I was able to pick up some of the models from this range

For various reasons I was of the same mind although I haven't read the books, I found the series worth watching after an initial reluctance to commit to spending the time.. which is considerable and on the whole I prefer films etc with a beginning, a middle and an end, to endless and often disapointing TV series, hopefully this series will have a decent end!

I should point out I don't watch TV as such, but buy likely looking movies etc to play on my home cinema

Re: Game of thrones in 1/72m

It seems that the real discussion here was not GoT but dragons in 1/72 scale:)
Nice addition Steve. Wizkids has hundreds of fantasy miniatures, many of them quite calidad for 1:72 (trolls, golems, giants and so in) I got two griffons which i want to give 1/72 riders since one year ago...
Bu the Day i read the Drsgon Rampant rulebook and it Looks quite easy ,dinámic and Fun!

Dragon Rampant - in fact all of the games that use the system - are very playable games and with the number of figures used, it's a great system for 1/72 games - as well as for people who are perhaps disillusioned - shall we say? - with another Games/Figure manufacturer whose rules have been changed out of all recognition from their original fantasy system.

Cavalry units are in 6's per unit and infantry are 12's or 6's depending on the quality of the troops. There are various categories of troops - Elites, Heavy and Light infantry etc, so basically you can configure your army which ever way you want it.

Re: Game of thrones in 1/72m

Oh and the other thing about the Osprey rule sets is that they are stunningly cheap compared with - say - another Games/Figure manufacturer whose rules have been changed out of all recognition from their original fantasy system. And not only are they compact but they are self contained as well.
