Dutch Apple cake

Hi! I'm new to this forum. Just wondered if anyone out there had a recipe for an authentic Dutch Apple cake?

Just read your post. Dutch apple cake as in PA Dutch? Or Dutch as in Holland/Netherlands Dutch? lol Heres a couple that may be of help to you..

Pennslyvannia-Dutch Apple Cake




6 med-sized apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced


1/4 cup White sugar


2 tsp Cinnamon


3 cup All-purpose flour


1 1/2 cup White sugar (yes, I know there is one above!)


4 Eggs


1 cup Cooking oil


2 tsp Vanilla extract


1/3 cup Orange juice


1 1/2 tsp Baking soda


1 1/2 tsp Baking powder




Method :


Toss the apple slices with 1/4 cup sugar and the cinnimon; set aside. Mix together the flour, 1 1/2 cups sugar, eggs, oil and vanilla, orange juice, baking soda and baking powder. Beat with an electric mixer at medium speed.


(The batter will be very thick). Spread a 3rd. of the batter in a greased 10 inch tube or bundt pan, top with half the apple mixture. Repeat layers ending with batter.


Bake in a pre-heated 350 degree oven for 1 hour. Remove pan to wire rack; cool for about 10 minutes. remove cake from pan. Cool completely and drizzle the top with confectioner's sugar glaze.) (Beat together 1 1/2 cups confectioners sugar, 2 tablespoons softened butter, 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract and 1 to 2 tablespoons water until smooth)

Dutch Apple Cake




1 cup Shortening


2 cup Sugar


1/4 tsp Salt


4 Eggs


3 cup Flour


1 tsp Soda


1 cup Cold water


1 tsp Cinnamon


1 tsp Cloves


1 tsp Allspice


3 med Apples, peeled, chopped fine




BOILED ICING


2 cup Sugar


1 pinch Salt


1 cup Pecans, chopped


1 cup Milk


2 tbl Butter





Cream shortening and sugar; add eggs and beat well. Sift flour, salt and spices together; dissolve soda in cold water. Add flour mixture and water alternately to creamed mixture. Fold in chopped apples. Bake in 350 degree oven in a 9x13x2 inch pan for 45 to 50 minutes.




To make icing: Boil sugar, salt, milk and butter in a heavy saucepan until it strings, about 20 minutes. Remove from heat and add nuts. Stir until it begins to thicken and pour over cooled cake. Cut in squares and serve.

Dutch Apple Cake





3 med Tart apples, peeled, sliced 1/4 inch thick, (3 cups)


1 cup Plus 3 Tbsp. sugar, divided


1 tsp Ground cinnamon


2/3 cup Butter or margarine, softened


4 Eggs


1 tsp Vanilla extract


2 cup All-purpose flour


1/8 tsp Salt




In a bowl, combine the apples, 3 tablespoons sugar and cinnamon; let stand for 1 hour. In a mixing bowl, cream butter and remaining sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each. Add vanilla. Combine flour and salt; gradually add to creamed mixture and beat until smooth. Pour into a greased 9x5x3" loaf pan. Push apple slices vertically into batter, placing them close together. Bake at 300 F. for 1 hour and 40 minutes or until a toothpic inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes on a wire rack. Remove from pan. Serve warm.




Yield: 10-12 servings.

Hi: I have tons of recipes for great apple cakes. Some are pudding like, others are lighter in texture. If you can describe what you want, I'll search through what I have and get it to you. I also have a yummy recipe that uses fresh sliced apples and then a caramel sauce to go over the top....to die for! (quote my husband). Hope to talk to you soon. Marilyn
