Colin,
The 8th Somerset Light Infantry were engaged on home defence duties after 1941.
Their Museum in Taunton will give you all the details that you require.
As for your Question as to what happened after the BEF came home.... Most of the lads from the Regiments that were decimated at Dunkirk were transfered (Rebadged) to other less traumatic duties. (I will stres that it was SOME...and NOT ALL).
My old Father in law was one. He was with the Welch Regiment. He spent the rest of the war on Searchlights in Weymouth.
