Dear Ladies and Gentleman,
On a hill above Folkestone in Kent, sits the remains of Shorncliffe Redoubt. It was on the hill top that Sir John Moore trained and created the world famous British Army Light Brigade in 1803 and the Green Jackets were brigaded 95th.
A year ago whilst researching for the 95th Rifles Regiment of Foot, I stumbled on the sad remains of one of the most important sites in British Military history. I have since been fighting a campaign to save it from developers and restore whats left of it.
The local people of Folkestone, Sandgate and Hythe have taken this Redoubt to their hearts and are proud to still have a link with Light Infantrymen through the Ghurkas, who are stationed in the Modern barracks.
Shorncliffe Redoubt will be featured in the New series of Time Team in January 2007 and it focuses on the spirit of the Riflemen and Lights that were created by "the greatest trainer of men" the British Army ever had according to the Duke of Wellington.
Please pass on this inforemation to your comrades and associations as we are putting pressure on the Army, MOD and DE to do the right thing and hand it over to the local people who want to care for it and restore the birth place of the British Army Light Infantry Brigade.
In 2007 the Rifles will live again. Please help us save their birthplace and the home of the Light Infantry Brigade.
Kind regards,
Chris Shaw
Chairman
Shorncliffe Redoubt Preservation Society. |
