Subject:   US tax return filing status

Message:   I am currently living in France, a French citizen, married to a US citizen. Up to now, I have been filing jointly with my wife as a resident alien of the US.

This year, I am thinking of filing as a non-resident alien and my wife and I may file as married filing separately (therefore my wife will file Form 1040 and I will file Form 1040 NR). At that time, I will revoke my choice as being treated as a Resident alien (as indicated in Pub 519 page10).

Question: Is is true that as a result of this change in status I will not be able to file jointly in upcoming years ? Is this true if I remain in France ? what if I should return to the US in a few years?
