Bed Time Battle

Is there any way to win the night time fights? My son just turned three and he's absolutely awful at bed time. I usually put him to bed at 10:30. My wife works night shift, so it works for her to have him sleep a little later. Most nights, regardless of whether he's had an afternoon nap or not, he's up for hours and hours. For instance, it's 1:20 AM and he's wide awake and quoting SpongeBob. One night last week, he was awake until 4 AM. We don't let him drink soda, so it's not that. Taking toys away doesn't work; he just plays with something else. Turning the lights out doesn't work; the light switch is in his room and he knows how to use it. SPankings don't work; he cries and then goes back to doing whatever he's doing. I'm afraid that I'll go to discipline him and go too far because I'm so frustrated and angry. This isn't funny or cute anymore. I work a lot of morning shifts and I'm averaging five hours of sleep a night with this crap. Suggestions?

Try this article in parenting magazine. It seems you have a mixture of 2-3 habits going on and the best way to address it is very a consistent schedule. Requires discipline from you and mom - but it sure worked for my sister's kids. They were all-night party-ers. good luck!
