I make clean-up a game

I make clean up time a game, my boys each have a plastic grocery-style basket that fits on their shelves. When it's time to pick up the house, they each try to fill up their basket faster -- and with more stuff -- than the other.

i added one of those easy over the door video racks on the back of a closet door to store our child's videos on the low shelves. i use the top for everything from gloves to sunglasses. all the little clutter-like things are now out of site and easily gotten to.

hide a laundry basket for toys

We have a small house and not alot of room for a toy basket. I took a laundry basket and put it under a round table that I have in the living room. It has a skirt that reaches the floor. During playtime, I just pull back the skirt and get the basket out, then hide it away when we're through.

Re: General Living and Organization Ideas

recently got this idea from a hotel we stayed at. I have 4 sons who love cereal. We have a lack of cabinet space so I went to The Container Store and purchased acrylic containers with plastic lids (they are tilted for easy kid access) then I purchased plastic scoopers for each container. I then placed these on a bakers rack it looks great and is perfect for extra storage.

Re: General Living and Organization Ideas

I am looking to organize a full playroom of toy chests and shelves into one wall of the new family room. Any decorative yet functional ideas?

Re: Organizing toys into family room

We did two things that worked really well. First, we replaced the kiddy-looking toy boxes with 3-4 cube-shaped storage ottomans with removable tops. These look great placed anywhere and make extra seating and table space when needed (try bed bath and beyond or target for these).

We did move in 3 coordinated shelf units to cover one wall - and these are great for storing games, books and toys, you can use baskets to organize smaller items (Target has great fabric-lined baskets - much cheaper than pottery barn!). If the shelves are mis-matched or if they just look messy, you can cover them: Simply cut a piece of fabric (that coordinates with your decor) the size of the shelf unit front - you can hem or finish the edges with iron-on fabric tape. Use strong stick-on velcro and adhere fabric to the top of the unit. Fabric can be removed or folded on top during playtime. Good Luck!

This is a tip to cut time when cooking, pizza cutter. Its a wonderful way to cut up grill cheese, or cut the crusts off fast, pancakes, french toast almost anything soft you need to cut up into small portions. Or for dicing, ham, cheese for omlets.

Re: General Living and Organization Ideas

Hi Everyone,

Hey, this is a really great site and I have already put it in my bookmarks because I think it will yeild a lot of useful practical information for me as a parent. I am in an interesting parenting category because I have three children who are spaced out over 15 years. My son is 22, my oldest daughter is 17,and the younger daughter is 7.

As a father of three children, each at a very different stage in their lives, I have spent the last seven years learning as much as I possibly can about the facts and myths of winning a significant college scholarship.

I share this with you not because they are my children, but because I want to help you and your children win the scholarship that will make college affordable for you. Check out my blog at http://www.writingup.com/blog/Auteurofmyself
there will be information there that is useful for parents of children at any age. If you stick with the daily reverse chronology you will see the formation of accomplishment oriented scholars over the course of their entire lives as learners. As college educations become more and more expensive, this information could prove practical indeed, for the parent of a young child.
