Chaplain Abijah Booth

Hello, everyone. While reseaching my family, found that I'm related to the Chaplain for the 26th, Abijah Booth. He is my GGG Uncle. I am interested to see if there is any information on him through the 26th. Anthing would be appreciated. Thanks for all the help.

My info

Here's the information I have on A. H. Booth:

Rank in: Chaplain
Rank out: Chaplain
Born in: North Carolina
Occupation: Minister
Lived in or near: Rienzi, MS (at enlistment)

And, as is the case in many records, there are conflicting comments:

One record says: "Resigned during the summer of 62 date unknown."

Another says: "Resigned 4/63 succeeded by M. B. Chapman."

Re: Chaplain Abijah Booth

Kevin and Steve --
Our family always called Booth 'Abijah Howard Booth' -- he was related to the Howard family, and apparently it was important to keep that in there. His daughter, Mary Lou Booth (my great grandmother) married Bill Green Lowrey, whose father, Brigadier General M.P. Lowrey, was called 'the fighting parson of the army of the Tennessee, and founded Blue Mountain College in Mississippi. In our stories, Lowrey and Booth were friends as well as in-laws; they were both Baptist preachers. Booth, however, was something of an abolitionist, and taught slaves to read before the war. My great uncle actually met a descendant of one of these slaves while he was working in Kansas City, and that family had passed down Abijah Howard Booth's name in their family stories.
That's my two cents. Hope it's interesting.

Re: Re: Chaplain Abijah Booth

Ethan, I find it very interesting. And I probably wouldn't have known any of it because I didn't know about his daughter. I thought he had only four sons. Do you have information on his service to the 26th? Do you know why he resigned? Photos? Other children? How about where he was buried? Thanks!

Great info!

Ethan,

Thanks for sharing this very interestig information. This is the kind of info you can only get from descendants. General M. P. Lowery, who raised the "other" Tishomingo Co. regiment (32nd Miss), has been a favorite of mine for years. It's interesting to hear of his relationship to Booth.

Steve
